Hey people. So far college, I know I definitely want to study English in New York (Boston's my other choice, but from my visits I've found that there's no place I'd rather study than NY). I have a solid GPA of 3.76 (unweighted) and I have 4-5 ECs that I've participated in for a long time.
My reach is only Columbia so far which is a stretch. My targets are Vassar, Sarah Lawrence and Tufts. I don't have any safeties so I'm hoping you guys can help me.
I visited NYU and I don't particularly like the environment there. I'm also not a US citizen so I think it'd be hard and pricey for me to try the state schools. Any ideas?

You’ll have a chance at tufts I’m pretty sure.

bumpity-bump.
Thanks for your input. Do you know any safety colleges I could find within NY state that have a good English Lit program?

FYI:
SAT: 2180 (M: 720 CR: 750 W: 710)
English is my first language.
IB Diploma Student (HL: English Lit A1, History, Math SL: Spanish ab, Chemistry, Art)
I might consider a minor in International Relations/Poli Sci. Unis that also have strong programs in that area are preferred but not a req.

You can pretty much get into almost all suny as safeties except maybe Geneseo. In NYC you could get into pace, Fordham, St. John’s and Hofstra without a problem. The schools that can be a bit tough would be NYU and Columbia, Cornell… What type of schools are you looking for btw ?

Community college always accepts.

I haven’t had a chance to visit any of the SUNY schools save Stony Brook and Geneseo, but I found the atmosphere in them nice and am considering to apply to the former if I don’t get in Vassar (first choice).
But honestly, I prefer small, liberal arts schools. I’m willing to sacrifice that for Columbia because the education is good and Tufts because I have an older sibling attending there. So basically I prefer small schools in New York (obviously) with a strong English program.

@libbyrue, I have no problem with community college (although I doubt it’s portrayed the way it is on tv, which happens to be my favourite show in the universe). But my parents, typical Asian tiger mom and dads they are, say they won’t pay for me to study at the US – I live in Asia – for community college.

Thanks both of you, and for more information to gauge what my safeties could be, maybe you could chance me? (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1367213-chance-vassar-columbia-tufts-etc.html#post14642824). Thanks!

Bump? hugs a ten-charrie rule

Yeah Vassar is great and you have the rec’s for it… Also look into Union College strong liberal arts school in NY as well as Marist College, St. Lawrence, Colgate, skidmore, Clarkson…, all these schools are strong liberal arts colleges in the state of NY

I’m a New Yorker so and I went through this whole college process last year.

Thank you Alex! You’ve been really helpful.

and to everyone else, bumpbumpbump?

If you are considering a SUNY…Geneseo is the one! Highly competitive small liberal arts college in Western NY. Well known in NY as a top school for undergraduate education.

How about Barnard?

It’s tough to get into, but Hamilton College appears to have a world class English lit program. GL!

Geneseo is a good choice, it’s the liberal arts SUNY. If you wanted a larger school, perhaps Binghamton? But, not for English.
