My son has acceptance from UT Dallas - Computer Science and Texas A and M - College of Engineering . Trying to decide between the two. At this point he wants to do computer science but not 100% sure.
Also, wanted to find out info on how hard it is at either of the schools to change majors into Business if he decides to do so or to be able to double major or major/minor in Comp Sci/business.
Thanks for your input!
Let me clarify, so it does not not come across as a money question. He does have AES at UTD and no money at A&M. If A&M would be a better option, we are ok with paying.
So, my question still stands (taking money out of the equation)
Then you probably wouldn't consider them equal schools, right? Mays Vs? in the business back up option, but UTDs CS, how does that specifically compare in your analysis? This is a $50K question as you have full tuition plus at UTD.
We had been told that transferring from eng to business at TAMU (assuming good freshman stats) was feasible.
You are right regarding the business option.
UTD CS I think is a good program and maybe just below A&M in rankings - but you bring up a good point -is it worth the $$
Also there is no guarantee that he will get into CS at A&M - he will have to go through the ETAM process.
Its good to know that transfer to business from Engineering is feasible.
Apart from academics, UTD seems more like a commuter school and I hear you don’t get the “college experience” that you would at A&M - thoughts?
Texas A&M engineering students do have to apply to competitive admission to their majors after completing first year prerequisites (though 3.5 college GPA gives automatic by admission to desired major). Most majors are not super competitive, but you want to check the entry to major stats first.
According to website, Mays lets in 100 internal transfers with a min gpa requirement of 3.5 and list of prerequisite classes. Sounds pretty competitive, not sure how the pre-reqs line up with what you’d take first year as eng major.
I think computer science may be better than undergrad business in terms of jobs after graduation. And there is always grad school for an MBA, which holds a lot more weight for career than undergrad business.
Look at the picture where he self selects out of CS but doesn't have a shot at business at TAMU (because again, that would require him to be successful in his freshman year), are you happy to pay for anydegree at TAMU?
He needs to keep a 3.0 gpa at UTD for AES, that is a nice soft landing if he wobbles IMO. Plenty of CS kids will. Even good HS students are taken aback by weed out classes.
Reddit has some good discussions on Tx schools. Look at weed out discussions for A&M and UTD.
