Looking for Chances with a 2.7 Gpa

Hi everyone! I have been watching the posts here for a while, and I finally decided to register as a user and post asking my own chances.

GPA: 2.79
Rank: 243/342
SAT: 1920/31 ACT
School: Competitive magnet

APs: Computer Science, Statistics, Biology, US History, English
ECs: Science Fair State Semifinalist, Part time work, Volunteering, Tutoring for ESL

Weaknesses: , no leadership positions, bad grades/rank, high family income (over $85k)
Strengths: Committed to volunteering, high SAT scores,

I would like to be chanced for the following schools:

Old Dominion University
West Virginia University
Virginia Commonwealth University
Marshall University (West VA)
Frostburg State University
Flordia Gulf Coast University
Ferris State University
Temple University

Where are you in-state?

Virginia,In state.

Well, Temple is a high possibility for you. Your GPA is 2.7 unweighted, right?

Yes,unweighted.
It’s a 2.85 weighted,my school weights things weirdly.

Your standardized test scores are great and should be able to make up for your low gpa. If you don’t mind me asking what happened to your gpa?

Eh,a lot of things. My dad was in an out of work my freshman and soph years which was stressful, lights got turned off, heat got turned off,my dad became an alcoholic and started beating my disabled mom, threw her out of the house naked. I had live at a shelter for a bit to take care of her. A lot of this distracted me a lot from my work.

That and I have Math Dyslexia and Algebra 2 and Chemistry (math courses) I barely passed which brought me down loads.

Also,I’m a bit of a slacker and don’t turn in stuff on time.

Trolllllll

I’m a ■■■■■? How so?

“threw her out of the house naked”

ummmm…

He did. Because my parents have a highly dysfunctional relationship filled with domestic abuse that’s likely scarred me for life, I’m a ■■■■■?

I’m sorry, that must have been hard. No one deserves to go through that.

Unless you are ■■■■■■■■, which I don’t think you are.

I don’t lke it when people automatically dismiss someone as a ■■■■■ because of family happenings. My mom busted out my ex-stepdad’s windows, does this make me a ■■■■■? My stepdad pawned my stuff for drugs. Am I still a ■■■■■? Really? really? You would really dismiss someone like that? You’re a horrible person.

Thanks guys.
I tend to not like to put my family issues on chancing boards like this because it looks like I’m just making up excuses, because there are kids who have gone through stuff just as bad as me if not worse and still maintain really high GPA’s. Do you think if I explain my family life in my essay they’ll be more leinient on my poor marks?

^ Absolutely! Don’t believe that kids in worse situations still maintained high marks, because that’s isn’t true.

Definitely. Colleges will want to know what happened to your GPA. You have a very decent ACT score as well, for someone who has been though extremely tough and traumatic times.

You should do very well in your applications, and although your GPA was impacted by tough times, those same tough times will overshadow weaknesses that you have in your information.

Good luck.

EDIT: I also meant to include that you should mention them in your essays so the colleges know your situation.

Thanks everyone!
