Looking for non-conceptual based Art School

I wouldn’t recommend you attend an art school if you only want to focus on the technicals of art. All students you meet at art school will have a concept behind their artwork, and that doesn’t even make it conceptual art. If you really just want to focus on the technicals, there are some schools just for that, but I don’t think there are universities that just focus on that. Most art programs start with a foundation year in which all students improve their technical skills. Learning the technical skills allows full expression of ideas and better transition from mind to canvas, paper, or other medium. Ultimately, if you only want to learn the technicals, do not attend an art school for your college.

Actually I disagree, while the focus on foundation year and less emphasis on what I would refer to as technique are rampant at art schools there are some art schools that give much more traditional instruction and more emphasis on technique.

Some have been discussed here and you can generally figure out which ones they are by looking at the art on their web sites. You’ll see much more traditional imagery (read painterly realism) and much less mention of concept.

They aren’t necessarily better or worse, just a different approach than those schools which focus on “learning how to think.” If a school mentions a course using rabbit skin glue you’re on the right track…
