Looking for opinions on top choice colleges

Hello!

My top choice colleges are the University of Washington, and Ohio State University. I’m an Ohio resident, but my parents will be moving to South Carolina the summer I graduate.

Which should be the one I pursue?

They are both good. Why not apply to both and see where you get in and what the finances look like? You are going to need to have more than 2 schools on your list of places to apply.

Thanks, I am aware that out of state college will be way higher but I would take out the loan to get out of the state. Any suggestions for my list? (30 act, 4.0W gpa) junior this year, looking into engineering @DadTwoGirls

Don’t go to UW unless you get accepted in t their pre Engineering program with admission.

^ Perhaps you meant “Direct to College” admission at Washington:

“but I would take out the loan to get out of the state.”

Keep in mind that loans have to be repaid, and you also have to pay interest on the loans. There are huge advantages to graduating without debt. One example is being able to get your own apartment rather than live with parents to save money, which in turn opens up a much wider range of locations where you can get your first job. In some cases too much debt can make graduate school impractical.

Given your parents moving I am not sure which state will be in-state for you, but it is something that you need to find out. If you are in-state for Ohio, then Ohio State is very good.

Make sure you understand how expensive UW is for out-of-state. I crossed it off my list because the cost was so prohibitive. I think it was something like $60,000/year? I can’t quite remember but it was ridiculous, and all their aid goes to in-state students.

^ OOS tuition, room and board total around $47,000 at UW. OOS students may also receive the merit-based Purple and Gold Scholarship of between $3,250 and $5,500 per year, which reduces the cost to around $41,500 to $43,750.

You can only borrow ~$5500/year. Unless your parents can pay ~$40k/year, you need to look for schools that offer merit for your stats.

So UW isn’t a good choice.

Anything else in the Pacific Northwest that is easier to pay for? My list is just Ohio State, Pitt, Georgia Tech, UT Austin.

And of course UNC Chapel Hill, which if I was accepted to, I could get my family to move to North Carolina rather than South.

Depending on your stats U of Idaho. Way samller, in a rural instead of urban area, and less selective but they have a good engineering program.

“Anything else in the Pacific Northwest that is easier to pay for?”

Depends upon your definition of “Pacific Northwest”. The University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University are both very good and a bit less expensive. Both are in British Columbia. They would still be a bit more than I personally would be comfortable borrowing, unless you can get at least some help from parents or elsewhere.

Stats:
Rising junior, White male, 1st-generation student
By senior year: 3 AP classes & 1 Dual credit (school max)
Current stats: GPA 4.0 W, ACT 30
I’m involved in every club at the school, as well as a section leader in the high school band, a member of the choir. I was also on varsity golf before, but I’m looking into a spring sport

I think my parents would help out some, but they can’t pay for a $50,000 school on their own. I’d really like to get out of state though.
