I am a high school senior in ohio. I defiantly am going out of state. OSU is not in consideration. My parents are willing to pay for most of out of state tuition as long as it is a reputable college. I intend on majoring in some sort of engineering. I really like all of these campuses and if tuition was not a factor UM would be the answer. 40k a year is just a steep price. I am also a huge college basketball fan and have always valued a good basketball team that i could go cheer for. If Michigan is my favorite, it it worth the extra cash to go. Any advice facts or help is much appreciated

Pretty much no one pays the “sticker price” for a college; financial aid is an option, usually.

Plenty of people pay sticker price, especially at the more selective institutions which have the luxury of turning full payers away. Also Michigan is closer to $56k a year without any merit aid. Why aren’t you considering Ohio State?

Virginia Tech and NCSU are somewhat lower in list price for out of state students.

But what is wrong with Ohio State?

I am dead set on out of state. Most my school goes to ohio state and I just want a new start. I am applying but do not want to attend. Plus michigan is a much better engineering school anyways

With 42,000 undergrads I doubt you’ll see most of your school. Any school will be a fresh start.

It IS an incredibly steep price to go to Michigan, but if you’re willing to pay it, it’s like no other school I’ve been to. Go blue!

If you are doing engineering, then you need to look at the engineering school numbers for undergrad. Georgia Tech and Purdue are way lower in price, GT is higher ranked for undergrad engineering, and Purdue is nearly tied. Pretty steep price to pay for basketball tickets.

OSU unknown for engineering, BTW, and you probably won’t see most of your class. I understand wanting the new start, however. As long as your parents are willing to pay for it. But I wouldn’t be so cruel as to stick them with the bill for Michigan.

“But I wouldn’t be so cruel as to stick them with the bill for Michigan.”

Thousands do every year MrMom62.

I know that thousands pay to go to Michigan, and my family will be paying full sticker for D to go to school. I would pay the Michigan price tag too if I thought it was the best choice for D.

My only comment was that the increase in quality (if any) of a Michigan engineering degree over an OSU (or Purdue or GT) engineering degree is probably not worth the cost, especially if the primary reason is basketball. Going out of state is one thing, picking the most expensive school for a basketball team is a bit irresponsible.

Please support that assertion. While OSU may not be a research powerhouse on the level of MIT, Michigan, or GT, to say it’s unknown for engineering is a massive stretch, particularly when it comes to academia.

looking at the context, I’m guessing that was a mis-type

You should definitely apply to OSU. I would also apply to Minnesota-Twin Cities and Purdue-West Lafayette. Both have excellent Engineering programs, reasonable tuition rates and strong BBall traditions.
