Admissions just made a new blog post that referenced a couple of topics with one specifically covering when finalists are notified for the scholar program.

Here's the paragraph from the post, "What’s next for Scholars applicants? You will learn whether you are selected as a finalist by January 31. On this day, finalists will also learn of their admission decision, regardless of which decision plan they chose. Applicants not selected as finalists will learn of their admission decision on the notification date for the admission plan they chose. We will post further updates about this in January."

I just want to make sure I understand this correctly. If my daughter receives a decision on December 15th that means she's not a finalist. If she is a finalist what will her status be on November 15th when they release all the ED1 decisions?

The post says that finalists will learn they are finalists and also will learn of their admission decision on January 31st. Confusing as I would assume that anyone who makes it as a finalist would be accepted. If not, for a ED1 applicant there would seem to be this limbo period between December 15th and January 31st where you wouldn't know the status of your application.

Can past parents or students help me understand this? I'm just trying to manage expectations a bit.

You can call them to find out but I believe all ed 1 applicants will find out if they were accepted when the other ed kids hear. She just won’t know if she is a finalist until the end of Jan. I think the blog was directed toward kids who didn’t apply ed1. If they are a finalist they will get their early notice of their admission in Jan. even if they applied regular decision. If a RD applicant is not selected as a finalist then they won’t know if they are admitted to Emory until the regular decision (or ED2) date.

I think ED applicants find out their decision on 12/15 and find out about the Emory Scholars program by Jan 31. RD applicants find out by Jan 31 if they are a finalist, and if they do not hear anything then they will find out by April if they are accepted. I think if you find out that you are a finalist by Jan 31, then you will know whether you have been accepted.

This is my interpretation. My daughter showed me the same blog this morning and I found it confusing.

Terribly written blog entry. Confusing and not accurate. All ED applicants will find out whether they were accepted, deferred or rejected during the 12/15 time period. But the Emory Scholars will not be select by then so the ED accepts have to be made (or had to have been made) before the Emory Scholars notifications are made. Because it is a merit designation, the funds are scholarship not financial aid, and would reduce the student’s need. Emory, in the past, would allow releases from ED if the FIN AID package was inadequate, and did not extend deadlines for the Scholars notification. That’s pure gravy and not supposed to go into the decision.
