what state do you live in? people often underestimate how much state schools cost (I live in Virginia and UVA in-state costs would have been more expensive than Johns Hopkins, with the need-based aid I got, and we're upper-middle class).

this year, for example, UVA in-state was ~$17,000 (and financial aid is very unlikely) and out-of-state is over $35,000...

UVA and UNC specifically are very hard to get into if you're out-of-state. UMD is probably the easiest for out-of-state.

(if you live in DC, of course, none of this matters)

I agree with Ugen64. The state schools in your state are a good bet. Other than that, there may be a few state schools that would give aid to recruit you, but many will not offer aid. Since you seem to qualify for need-based aid, private schools will probably be better for you than out of state publics. You are also a minority- that will help. You should use one of the online websites to estimate how much money your parents will be expected to contribute. Many private universities will come up with aid to cover costs above that amount. However, do research. Many schools are known for giving good aid, while others are not. Concentrate your applications on the ones with good aid.
