accounting? then CSUN. i know, it seems stupid to tranfer there, but their accounting department is crazy good. i mean... REALLY good.

I got through all my 60+ units of GE/most of my major prereqs in 1.5 years, but that was only because I blew through 20 units last summer and had an AP test to cover one of my English requirements. I think you'd be under a ridiculous amount of stress trying to get out of CC in a year with enough units to transfer as a sophmore, (unless you had APs to cover some of your requirements...which I was so glad I had). True, you'll get out of CC faster but I know that my grades suffered over the summer because I tried to pile on as many units as I could. I'm also a full-time student so I didn't have to worry about work either.

And CC definitely saves a TON of money... with transportation and tuition and everything I've probably only spent 5 grand so far.

Can I ask you how your schedule was like? How many units you took each quarter or session.

Spring '07 semester (my school's on the semester system) I took 13 units. Since I was able to handle that pretty easily I figured I could take on more units next session; that summer I took 20 (my school has two summer sessions; I took 10 units during each of those) of GE classes. This past fall I took 15; now I'm taking 18, which is definitely enough. >_< Still glad I did it this way though; glad I'm getting out of CC sooner...

If you want to transfer quicker I would probably reccomend knocking down a few classes over the summer, and transferring to a UC maybe for spring semester/quarter (if your major accepts students at that time... mine, you can only apply for fall admission)

Don't worry it's definitely possible to transfer after 1.5 years at a community college. I started at my college in Pennsylvania in January 2007 and this May 08 I will be graduating with my Associate degree. I have also been able to take all the courses required by Berkeley even though they were very different from the courses required for my graduation.

When I started my semester I made sure I am aware of all the courses needed for Berkeley as well as for graduation. Then, I managed my school time effectively in order to have everything done by May 08. In other words, I took 5 classes (15 credits) in Spring semester, then 4 classes (12 credits) in Summer I semester and 1 class (3 credits) in Summer II semester. In Fall 07 I took 6 classes (19 credits) and this Spring I am taking 6 classes (20 credits). In addition to all those classes I have been working part-time (15-20 hours a week). So, it is definitely possible!!! You just have to be determined to finish on time and not be afraid to take a lot of classes. BTW, I still have 4.0 GPA and I am from Europe (I came to US 3 years ago), so everything is possible :) Just believe in yourself.

I hope to get in to UC Berkeley - Haas or NYU in Fall 08. Still waiting for decision.

As for the money question, it is certainly cheaper to go to community college for first two years!!! Then, you can finish the next two years in a more expensive university. So go for it!!!

Thanks so much :)
Also, did those units include GE's AND classes for your major? I'm confused on what classes I actually have to take in general (classes not for any major). Can anyone help me determine this?

At a CCC you have to complete general education (it's easiest to follow the IGETC pattern; go here for more info):

University of California - Admissions

...and also as many major prereqs as you can. Or, if you're in a major with a lot of prereqs like Engineering or something, then conversely you should focus on the prereqs and take as much GE as you can. (Most UC's dont list IGETC completion as a requirement for admission but Berkeley does: unless you're in one of the aforementioned majors with a ton of prereqs you have to have it done.) I'll have completed all my GE and most of my major prereqs by the time I transfer.

Ah okay, so GE's and Pre-Req's for my major are COMPLETELY different right?
And the GE's are the ones listed on that UC site, which everyone has to complete?

I guess I'll ask my counselor whether or not I can start taking my GE's this coming quarter, or in the summer to get a head start on college.

Some classes for your major can be used for your GE credit. For example, some of the classes I was taking for my major (History of Western Music; Music Theory) fulfilled part of the arts and humanities section of IGETC. Most of the time, though, that probably won't be the case. Your college should have a chart/list of classes that are IGETC compatible; alternatively, you can check with ASSIST to see if certain classes will work for IGETC.

Simple question but, are units and credits the same thing? It says that UC's want 90 transferable credits, but I read somewhere that they want 60 credits or something?

90 qtr units, 60 semester units

Have you gone through this website? UCTransfer.org - Home

The units/credits that I earned were both for my major and Berkeley prereq. So I took all the classes necessary for my major (Business Admin.) + any remaining classes to fulfill Berkeley's requirements. You should check with your CCC to see what classes you need for your associate degree and then you will know whether you need any extra classes for Berkeley. And as duogmeg said, check assist.org - you can find all the necessary classes for transfer there.
