I am currently a transfer applicant. The school is waiting for my spring grades which I sent last week so I should be getting a decision in another 2 weeks or so. The anticipation is just killing me! I want some opinions on my chances of getting in...here it goes

My HS grades were not good AT ALL so im not even going to talk about those. My sat was ok but they wont be looking at my sat grades since I have a year of college under my belt. For my Fall sem of college I had a 3.46 gpa and for this past spring I received a 3.43, I also gave in two strong reccomendations and a strong essay. Do you think they will be heavilly considering my hs grades even though I already have a year of college? Because if they do im S-C-R-E-W-E-D. I just wasnt very focused in HS..ive always been in advanced classes but in HS my mind was just in other places...im doing good now though. However, one thing that I am worried about is that in my first sem I had to take a remedial math class because I absolutely suck at math and I got a D in that class but it didnt affect my gpa because its a non credit course. I had to take it again in my second sem and got a C+ which also did not affect my gpa. Even if it did I would still get above a 3.0 but it definitely would not be a 3.4
....Do you think they will count those remedial courses against me even though it did not count toward my gpa? Besides the remedial math everything else counted toward my gpa

In my first sem I took:

Intro to Philosophy
Composition
General Psych I
Elementary Algebra

2nd sem:

World Religions
Advanced Composition
General Psych II
Elementary Algebra

They will look at HS grades and SAT’s if you are applying for sophomore year. If your remedial courses are on your transcript they will take that into consideration and see the grades you earned. What school are you coming from if you don’t mind sharing it? That can change how the admissions dept. views your gpa. How many credits did you take in the last year? If you didn’t take at least 24 credits they might not consider you a sophomore if you get accepted.

I am from NYC but attending a community college in CT right now. It is the best community college in the area…perhaps even in the state. In the requirements for transfers it states that they do not review sat scores for transfers with atleast a year. They have my sat scores anyway because it came with my HS transcripts…I don’t know if they will look at them. I have 19 credits(due to the remedial courses) as of May 2010. I was emailed by the director of admissions at LC stating that she has reviewed my application and all supporting documents and is waiting for my spring grades. I asked her what my chances are of getting in and she said that although she cannot say, she will say that they expect transfers to have atleast a 3.0 two college semesters in a row. I’m guessing that’s a good thing? I hope she was trying to hint at me that if I get over a 3.0 for the spring I can get in. Lol one can only hope

With 19 credits I’m not sure what they would admit you as. Students are required to take 12 credits a semester to be considered full time students, so you might still be a freshman. Part of what I’m saying here is that they may look at high school and scores because they may not see you as having a full year of college grades yet.
What else was on your app besides college grades? What EC’s/ volunteering have you done?
I would think getting an e-mail asking for more info is a good sign though. =]

I was a full time student and had 12 hours of classes a week but I only have 18 credits because of the two remedial math courses…if I would have gotten credit for those I would have had 24 credits…the remedial classes are mandatory…but you do not get credit for them unfortunately!
On my app I put down that I took gymnastics in college and was also part of the Political Union in my school the first semester. I didnt do many extra curriculars in college because of my job.
However, in HS I was part of everything I was in so many clubs I dont even remember. I was a peer mediator, a race relations facilitator(which is a person who is trained to teach freshman about racism), latino club member, etc.
In my essay tho I explained that my grades were so poor in HS because I was going thru personal and family struggles. I also wrote that I am much more determined now and ready to make an impact. I also had two strong reccomendations that I mentioned before.

So in a nutshell:

Bad HS gpa but lots of clubs and activities

Awesome college essay explaining personal and family struggles that plagued me in HS. I did not go into details about what the family struggles were I just said that it got in the way of my education, but how much I’ve changed and much more headstrong now. I also mentioned in my essay how much I would love and be proud to be at Fordham.

Great college gpa average 3.5 for the year…but had one class each semester that did not count toward my gpa. If they counted those classes into my gpa it would still be above a 3.0 but not a 3.4 or 3.5…I also did not participate in many activities in college…only two.

But I made deans list in the Fall.

And have two good reccomendations

So with all that being said…how do u think my chances fair? You can be totally and completely brutally honest lol =]

Fordham doesn’t seem to weigh high school grades as heavily as some other privates do. I did just average during hs, but really well at a public university and I was accepted as a transfer for the fall. But I do think the D/C+ you received in math might hurt you a bit even if it doesn’t affect your gpa since they would receive your entire transcript rather than just a gpa. And also, it seems like for Fordham the recommendations don’t take a big portion of their decision factor…

Anyways, I think you have a fair chance, depending how they’re impacted by your essay.

I just got into lincoln center with housing I’m soo excited!!! Ugghh its a freakn miracle I got in amongst all these ppl with like 3.9 gpas lol
