Loomis Chaffee!!!

Hey everyone,
I got accepted into Loomis Chaffee yesterday (super excited!) and I was just wondering, does anyone here go to Loomis? Can you please tell me more about the dorms, teachers, etc? Like a student's perspective? Thank you so much!

Hello! Congrats on getting into LC! I am a recent LC alumn and wanted to respond to your post. I consider my four years at Loomis to be the best four years of my life (I am NOT exaggerating!).

The classes are challenging, but worth it. Thanks to LC, I had a smooth transition from high school to college and felt better prepared for class than many of my peers did. The teachers at Loomis are simply incredible. They are kind, helpful, intelligent, fun, and, most importantly, they want to see you succeed. You will build great relationships with all of your teachers- which makes learning fun and easy. One of the best parts about going to a school like LC was that everyone around you works hard. You’ll thrive on the energy and excitement of those around you- making the experience truly memorable. You’ll be given an advisor when you first start- he or she will meet with you throughout the year to talk about how your classes and activities are going. This person will not only be a great resource for you, but he or she will also become a good friend!

Overall, the dorms are great! The underclassmen halls are the newest on campus, so the rooms are sizable. Each dorm has a strong bond among the students. You’ll end up growing up with many of them, so it really is a unique & fun experience. There are dorm parents (typically around 3) in each dorm. These parents are there to help you transition into a new setting, plan activities for the residents and act as a mentor to you.

Dorm life in general at LC is so much fun. There are movie nights, birthday parties, BBQs, concerts, dances, and so much more. All the faculty & staff work hard to make sure there are events going on over the weekend so everyone can have a good time and blow off some steam.

The food at Loomis is definitely better than I expected. Lots to choose from and always great tasting- I miss it when I go to my college’s dining hall! There’s a great salad bar, sandwich bar, pizza bar, pasta station, PLUS there are ever changing entree selections that usually have meat and veggies options.

I hope this gives you a better overview of Loomis. In all honesty, if I could go back and do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat. LC is definitely a place where you will get a top rated education, make life long friends, and have fun every step of the way.

Best of luck!

May I ask if you applied via common application or Loomis Chaffee’s own application forms? Thank you.

@jgh6464 Thank you so much! Very helpful!

@Stylus I applied via the common application :)

Can you share some of the pros and cons that you have noticed from your experience at Loomis? Maybe 3-4 pros and 3-4 cons? I think it would help those who are comparing a lot of different schools right now.

@MissMimi- I think that any pros and cons you hear on these boards will be pretty subjective and hard to base such a HUGE decision on. What I would suggest is that you attend the revisit days for all the schools you were accepted to and ask all the questions you have, take copious notes, meet as many people as you can, and then base your decision on what’s right for you using the information you have gathered. Good luck!

It was the revisit day–versus revisits to 2 other schools–that really sold our DC on LC.

Thanks. Then I shall sign myself up. Hope that it makes this tricky choice a little easier!

Great school, great adcomm’s school is trending upwards!

Does anyone know Ivy League college acceptance rate at LC? I heard that LC acceptance rate is too high compare to other schools and quality is not that good for past several years…

I would really love it if people would specifically write more about Loomis. My d has 5 schools to choose from and we simply cannot do 5 revisits with some of them being 2 days long. Please, we really would like to hear more and more from students, alums, and parents about Loomis. Thanks

@ Work24hr I do not think any schools really publish that exact statistic but you have to take into account that many of the ivy acceptances at any boarding school are for recruited athletes.

@bshopeful2013 Hi! I am current Junior at Loomis and absolutely love the school. I would definitely suggest going to as many revisits as you possibly can. It is extremely difficult to differentiate between schools until you actually visit them. I was set on attending Deerfield until my revisit day and found out that I did not like the school as much as I could. It is pretty hard to sum up Loomis, but I would love to answer any specific questions if you post them. Perhaps, I could also say what I think makes Loomis different from the four other schools your daughter was accepted into if you wanted my insight.

@loomis96. What do you mean by athletes? You mean most of boarding school graduates who goes to ivy is by applying as athletes at ivy?

@bsherewego While I certainly wouldn’t say most athletes going to ivys from boarding schools are recruited athletes, athletes certainly are a large percentage of those going to ivy league schools. Due to the strength of many boarding schools’ athletic programs, we naturally tend to have many extremely strong athletes. Ivy League schools, while they technically can not let students “commit”, will send out likely letters to basically recruited and “committed” athletes. Although receiving a likely letter does not ensure your admittance into that schools is almost a guarantee.

Hi! I was looking at Loomis the other day, and from what I’ve hear, dorm life is amazing, but I have found no pictures of Loomis dorms as to get an idea of how dorms really are. How are the dorms for upperclassmen? Do upperclassmen have study hall? What comes with your dorm? Loomis sounds like a nice place. I like the academics and sports it offers!

Can anyone give me some insight as to how campus life is please? I would relly appreciate it!

I just got accepted off of their waiting list and I think I might be going there!

What Grade did you apply to? I like Loomis a lot, what are your other options?

9th! Pomfret, but maybe another wait list will come through.

Well, Congrats and best of luck! I am applying to LC  I really like the school, specially the Academics and that it offers vball, not many schools I looked into offered vball so I’m pretty excited about the whole admissions process

@fiercehearted did you go to revisits, if so, how where the dorms and how were the people? Was everyone friendly?
