While I know this may be off topic, I got back from UCLA where in trying to bypass notorious LA traffic I took some side streets and ended up driving through the Santa Monica mountains on some obscure side streets. But, what's nice about LA is that the 101 is located in a valley and I was able to see it from the mountains and gradually make my way down. All in all, it was very interesting. What with the recent rains, the roads were potholed and there were a few little mudslides.

My question is, what would you suggest to pass the time while driving but is also somewhat productive. Today, I listened to a few lectures by Professor Sugrue(pton prof). Suggestions????

Next time I won't leave the highway

I had to drive for an hour before I could make myself down the valley

what time did u leave? i've noticed that the best times to be on the 405 north going back from UCLA is between 12 and 3....if you're somehow unlucky enough to be heading back after 5, then i wish you good luck.

i personally dont mind the traffic...i put on my fav cd and sing like ive never sung before....and u can also get a chance to know ur fellow drivers if u roll down ur windows :p hahhaha, if u know what i mean

btw, sempi, did u exit getty center drive or mulholland and make your way through the side streets? cause the 101 isnt much farther down...if im not mistaken, before u hit the sherman oaks galleria, you should see the 101...i usually stick with the 405 till after roscoe blvd., then i take the 118 to the 210...but i guess it all depends on where you live

hahaha, talking traffic on CC, i love it :D

what? productive? what r u on? Turn up dat Bass and Drop it Like its Hot! Yeah!

took exit at skirball center and then went east on mulholland(neighborhood reminded me of my hometown and san marino)

usually I take the 101 S then 134 east until i hit the 2 N( guess you can tell where I'm from)

I lived in LA for 8 weeks this summer and the traffic is horrible (we had to make daily commutes to my internship site at Boeing Satellite Systems)

The weather is really nice though =) and UCLA campus is pretty sweet.

Haha, just thought I'd like to chip in.

semp, are u auditing classes at UCLA too?

doing immunopathology research at the Factor School of Nursing

specifically,

stuff dealing with polymerase chain reaction

very in depth and cool,

everyone at the lab is really friendly/skeptical that I'm a hs student

PCR, is so repetive tho, i hate it, of course i ahte biology, so blech

i have an internship where we do way to much PCR

PCR is almost as bad as running electrophoresis gels all day

yea gels suck, blech, i hate pipettineg weve been purifying DNA recently which is just pipette centrifuge pipette centifuge forever and it takes liek 2 hours to do 14 samples its neverending

on some days I spend twice the amount of time driving there as I am, in the lab.....
why cant socal have a good mass transportation system

yah i live in the valley and hafta drive to USC for diving practice, talk about a commute.

i've perfected the art of holding my notes against the steering wheel so i can study while driving and i sing quite well along to the radio

hahaha....careful for those guys who cut u off and suddenly break for no reason :p

I'm one of those people, though not intentionally, I am a VERRRYYY bad driver, I passed my test by only 1 point. I drive like an old lady. But, I havent gotten in an accident in.

Some of my bad driving stems from the fact that I often eat my meals in the car. Ie, trying to eat subway sub while racing down the freeway or balancing chicken mcnuggets on my lap while trying to change lanes. All in all, I am a HORRIBLE driver and I apologize in advance if I cut anyone off.

One time the person in front of me braked suddenly and I breaked suddenly and the cars behind me had to go on to the shoulder.... not good

i think that the fact that u drive like an old lady is what causes all the problems...u gotta learn to be comfortable with the road, lol, and be aggressive! Familiarize yourself with your vehicle...adjust the mirrors to give u the best view (that way u dont have to move around a lot)....o, and u gotta adjust ur seat so its juusstt right. One thing i've noticed in all "old lady" drivers is their tendency to sit tremendously upright while driving. take fat joe's advice and "lean back" :p

and mostly importantly, u gotta find ur own style...all the stuff they teach u at driving school is bs. the most important thing is to be comfortable, alert, and confident. Always be aware of your surroundings...your mirrors are ur best friends while driving, use them and abuse them "like a cheap prostitute" (haha, phil :))

p.s. before you get to mulholland, u go up that annoying hill...be extra careful when going DOWN that hill, cause ive made the mistake of driving really, really, really fast while going up the hill and then breaking like a madman when i finally get to the top cause theres always crazy traffic near getty...

BEEEEE SAFE

then again, old people are the segment of the population which are least likely to get into an accident

btw- I still dont know how to do those smilie thingies, anyone care to explain

On a side note the Getty is AMAZING, having been to a lot of art musuems the Getty manages to have the great art of the East Coast and Europe without forgetting that it is in California, the architecture is breathtaking and the look out to the ocean from the garden is AMAZing I can't praise the Getty enough .....
