I've been considering transferring to another university because the one I'm currently at, although great in education, lacks in terms of the city and areas that surround it and the student environment.

All university's that I have looked at for applying to transfer (mostly top tier/high merit scholarships and good FA) to have required LOR's from professors at your current university. I have a 3.72 s/cGPA and the professors I would ask I have received A's in their respective lectures.

I'm worried about their perception on me asking for a letter so I can transfer to another school. Although my reasons make sense to myself, I'm afraid they may not understand or like it. If I didn't get accepted to the schools, I am also afraid that they would not let me near any of their research in fear that I'm generally not happy.

Has any encountered this sort of situation? Am I being silly?

Professors get asked to write them all the time for various reasons. Don’t worry about asking. I think most professors want their students to be happy. I phrased my reasons for transferring as a “it’s not you, it’s me” and “I’m looking for a better fit” kind of thing.

I would suggest asking the professor in person (say after class) if s/he was willing to write me one. If the professor’s reaction is enthusiastic, then I would ask to set up a time to meet. During the meeting is when you explain why you need said LOR.

Good luck!

Don’t worry about it. The majority of professors will be happy to help you out, provided you have done well and have been an active participant in class. People are nice.

I thought my profs would also have a negative reaction but was surprised at how happy they were that I was applying elsewhere.

You’re being silly.

Be genuine and kind when you ask them for the LOR and it won’t be a problem.

they’re professors - they get asked for LORs for various reasons all the time. my profs were really excited that i wanted to leave haha so don’t worry. just be polite, and make it easy for them by giving them a copy of your resume and transcript, etc, and give them a “due date” that gives them at least a month to do it for you.
