lost

So I just got accepted to csf. My plan is to transfer to either from a jc/cc to a uc, or a calstate to a uc. Im kind of nervous about adapting to the calstate schools and am afraid that I can't handle it. Should I just go through with it, or just go from a cc/jc to a uc? Also, which system is an easier way to get transfered into a uc? My friends have told me jc/cc has a better transfer acceptance rate then a calstat to a uc would. I don't know which path to take . ):

@wsupflakes - If I were you, I would go to a jc/cc, stay 2 years then go to a UC. In a lot of the jc/cc’s they have a program called the GAT (Guaranteed Admission Transfer). You could join this program after completing 30 units (you need 60 to transfer). GAT guarantees you a transfer to most of the UC’s except Berkeley and LA. If you are looking to go to UCLA, there is a program called TAP. I’m not too familiar with it, but it is a priority transfer. Of course, with these programs, you will have to keep up a minimum GPA. Depending on which school you’re looking to transfer to, the GPA may vary but it is not too tough, pretty easy. Also, if you pick the right classes, jc/cc will be much easier. You just have to try hard, stay focused, do some ec’s. Don’t get lazy! I am also in jc, planning to transfer soon to either CAL, Cornell, USC, or NYU for business. I have a 4.00 GPA and a lot of ec’s. It is not too difficult, and I know you can do it! It is very wise to decide your major right when you start, so that you know which classes to take.

^^ you got it the other way around. it’s actually TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) instead of GAT

peace :)

haha! Thank you. I was wondering why GAT sounded so awkward!

Hey guys, thanks for replying. Im also wondering what makes a csu to a uc transfer more difficult ?

i dont know the actual answer, but I believe its because UC’s figure you got into a college and want to stay there, but people going to CC’s are not there to stay, they want to transfer. but if your at a csu, u could stay if you wanted.

so who is more needy for a transfer? cc students.

and yes everything hellostranger57 said is true. TAG = guaranteed admission to “other” UCs. UCI UCSB UCSD UCD etc. TAP is just a transfer agreement that offers you priority admission over regular transfer applicants. (they look at your app a little longer, this is what ive been told from a UCLA admission rep. dont rely on it though haha)

in order to go through TAG u need to maintain a 3.5 GPA and complete honors i think.
for TAP its a 3.2 GPA, but of course depending on your major, it varies.

go to a cc, you wont regret it. if you are as motivated as i think you are, you’ll do fine.
CC only has one option, transfer. CSU has two options, stay/transfer. force yourself to do well at a CC and transfer to your school of choice (almost)

what i’ve heard is that UC’s actually set off a percentage of admissions just for transfer students from jc/cc’s. If this is the case, going from jc/cc will be much more hopeful than state transfer.

I think both Dainese and jparkec knows what they are talking about. I agree with them as well. Go to jc/cc, stay 2 years, transfer.

Yea I’ve been thinking for a whole week about this. Im going to go to a jc/cc then transfer. Thanks for your time guys. I appreciate it. Now its my turn to go find a great cc/jc out there. Thanks again (:

where are you located? If you are in the Bay Area, or in Los Angeles area I can definitely make some recommendations.

mtsac, PCC, OCC, SMC are good ones in socal

There is another thing to think about: The general education requirements are a bit different between the two systems. If you look on assist.org, you can see that some of the general education classes are not as difficult if you plan on transferring to the CS system. One example is the math requirement. The UC requirement is mathematical statistics or better. The CS system allows the statistics for social science majors, which is much, much easier. There are other differences, but this one sticks out. BTW, I do know that UCI allowed the statistics for social sciences a year ago, but not so sure anymore. I think all the UCs are going to the tougher math.

Make sure to follow the IGETC and UC transferable courses listed for your CC. Otherwise, you are wasting time and money. If you are going to use a TAG program, get your toughest core classes finished ASAP, then fill in with the rest. Assist.org will be your friend and get you through.
