Anyone who will be living in lothrop...or anyone who lived in lothrop?
what is the room like? does it get really hot?? (heard there's no A/Cs)
anything i should definitely take with me?
also...it seems a little far from the main campus...any troubles with that??

Lothrop is not really far. One of the nice things about Pitt is that you can walk anywhere in ten minutes or less! Are you by any chance studying in any health related field? If so, Lothrop will be the most convenient dorm you could get.

yeah, i am pre-dent or pre-med. i figured that's why they put me at lothrop.
do you know any specifics about the rooms at lothrop hall??

Sorry, I haven't seen any Lothrop rooms for many years. Anyone else?

I lived in Lothrop for half the year last year and loved it. Assuming you're not it one of the quads, lothrop is mostly singles. When you walk your room there's a little area with a sink with a medicine cabinet and a closet, this area is tiled. Then you go through a open doorway. The room itself has a big window with an old heater underneath it across from the doorway and is carpeted. The furniture in the room consists of a three drawer low dresser, a desk, chair and a bed with a shelf in the headboard and underbed drawers. I would highly suggest buying a floor lamp since the only overhead light in your room is when you first walk in between the sink and the closet. I also bought a 2 sets of metal cube shelves from Linens and Things, you can also find them at Bed bath and beyond and some other places I think which I found very convenient. THe rooms aren't huge but they're nice, and it's acrually really nice having a single. Don't worry about how far it is from everything, it looks worse than it actually is.

Got assigned a single at Lothrop (but would've preferred having a roommate). At least it sounds pretty nice from ats7321's description.

Judging from your username "rosiedaisy" I'm going to assume you're female :)
I'm a guy, so are the floors coed or something?

floors 2-6 I think are guys along with 14, and 7-13 are girls.

thank you ats7321,
do you think I should get like a small A/C? I would be living in the 10th floor.
Anything else do you recommend me in buying/preparing?

and yes, Bender1012, I am a girl :)
nice to meet you fellow freshman, what's your major going to be?
i am not sure yet although I am taking a lot of sceince courses for my initial plan which is pre-med

also... what about the lounge areas (Tvs and such)?? do they have it on every floor?

An A/C is unnecessary, I was on the 12th floor last year and was fine, but I would get a small but nice window fan. Make sure you have plenty of power strips, I thought one would be enough but eventually went out a bought a second one. A lot of people go out and by curtains with tension rods to hang them on to make their rooms a little cozier. There are no towel racks in most of the rooms if I'm remembering correctly so I would either get something that goes over the top of your door or a couple 3m hooks. Actually buy some 3m hooks and a package of assorted tabs. I think it's called command removable mounting strips. It's basically impossible to put thumbtacks in the walls so these strips work great for posters and other things. Also bring at least one bowl, plate, cup, fork, spoon, and knife for yourself if not a couple of extra just in case. i would aslo advise getting a brita or pur water pitcher. The water in the dorms isn't awful but it tastes a whole lot better after going through a filter and getting cold in the fridge.

lounge areas are on even numbered floors and odd floors have a quad instead. Having your own tv isn't a necessity but it's a lot nicer than having to fight off others to use the lounge

thank you so much for your help ats7321... :) where are you living next year then?

ats7321,
Do you know if students are permitted to have either a window or free-standing AC if they want one?

I actually have no idea whether or not that's allowed, you'd have to call panther central for that one. Although only lothrop, holand, bruce and brackenridge don't have a/c i think.

I moved off campus I have an apartment with couple friends this year. Ilived in holland hall freshman year, sutherland for first semester sophmore year, and lothrop second semester sophmore year.

What did you think of sutherland ats7321? Was there some negative that caused you to move to lothrop?

yeah, my roomate had a habit of throwing parties in our room every weekend and keeping large bottles of tequila and wine in our fridge. I tried talk to her about it (we had been friends but over the summer she took up her new habits) and all hell broke lose so I put in for a room change.

As for sutherland itself, I loved it except for walking up the hill sometimes when I was tired, but they always have the bus that you can take up ( :

I lived in Lothrop 5 years ago (geez does time fly!). The rooms were great, perfect size and everything was nearby (except for a cafeteria in my day...but the Pete is now closeby with a cafeteria). If you live on an upper floor, the fan is essential! My boyfriend (now fiance) lived on the 14th floor (I was on 12th) and needed his window fan all winter long because it got so warm up there!

Re Sutherland:

I lived in Sutherland for the first month of my freshman year. The rooms are hard to beat, but the social life if you aren't an athlete (or rushing) is lacking. All of my friends ended up being in the towers and I ended up moving there after a month so I could hang out with my friends more often (and not rely on a bus getting me back home...I refused to walk up cardiac hill more than once a day).

ats7321: thanks for all the great info. You're a real asset.

rosiedaisy: I'm planning on doubling in biomedical engineering and music. I guess we'll be in some of the same classes, eh?

have fun listening to the loud helicopter going to and from UPMC all day in lothrop haha.

tower B for life! (honors dorms is where i stayed, and it was amazing!! especially the fire alarm going off at 12AM haha)
