I'm a junior hoping to attend Pitt for nursing. I know Lothrop Hall houses many nursing students due to the nursing living learning community there, so I've been reading a lot about it.

I noticed that Lothrop Hall has coed dorms, but same sex floors. Does this mean that my male friends (who will not be Pitt students) will not be able to hang out on my floor/in my room or are they not strict about that? Just wondering.

Also, any opinions on Lothrop in general would be greatly appreciated.

My wife and daughter recently took an “unofficial” tour of Lothrup so I can give you two opinions.

My wife was a nursing student 30 yeas ago and lived in Lothrup and her opinion is that they have done nothing to improve the rooms. She thought the were dumpy.

My daughter (who will be starting Pitt Nursing in the Fall) thought they were just fine and had no problem with them. She actually liked the idea of having her own room and being able to shut out the world when she was tired or needed to study.

Both of them agreed the lobby and common areas (including gym) on the first floor were fine.

I can’t help you with the male freinds question. I’m sure MY daughter is not even going to think about boys until after she finishes college.

Towers is also coed with same sex floors. My floormates in Towers have brought friends who are the opposite sex (not affiliated with Pitt) onto the floor/their rooms pretty often so it’s probably not a problem at all.

Coed by floor just means women’s rooms on one floor, men’s floors on the next. You can go back and forth as you please.

The nice thing about Lothrop is that while bathrooms are communal by floor (a reason it is coed by floor), each room has its own sink. This is much handier than you’d expect.

Pitt is also doing a ~$1 million upgrade to Lothrop this summer. Most of that will be going to convert first floor medical offices to new dorm rooms.

If there is a security desk to get in to Lothrup, students will have to sign guests in and out. DD lived in Sutherland and she even had to sign me in and out. Students are limited on overnight guests (not by gender, but number of nights) per semester.

I lived there my freshman year (not by choice). I wanted to room with one of my friends from HS in towers but we ended up getting placed in Lothrop in adjacent rooms. It actually worked out great. I was worried that a lot of the students living there would perhaps be antisocial. But the kid that lived across the hall from me ended up being in the situation where he was supposed to live with his friends from HS. We all became really good friends and I lived with them the next 3 years.

As for the dorm itself, its OK. I will agree that it appears “dumpy” but I don’t think it’s really any worse than Towers. Having your own room is great. Except I lived on the interior side of the dorm near the UPMC helicopter pad which was ridiculously annoying. Overall I was satisfied but that may have been inflated by the great friends I made from the situation.

Hi TitanMom16,
I am currently in lothrop and I do really like it here. However, I have not heard about it getting air-conditioning, but I may be wrong? And I must admit, those first few weeks at the begging of the school year were very hot without air conditioning. But, there are a few rooms, ones with windows blocked by this big wall thing, that do get AC. I can’t tell you exactly how many, so I would say it will all depend on chance? And I mean, it’s really only about 2 weeks at the beginning that it is really bad. But besides that, I think lothrop is great!
