I'm from an international college that offers fewer courses than American community colleges. I've applied to transfer for general admission for this year's Fall intake, and am in my last Spring semester here. I'm taking only 8 credits this semester (Physics 2 and Chemistry 2) because there is really nothing else that I needed to take that would fit into my timetable, so I'm planning to get a part time job soon, and work about 30 hours a week, during the weekdays after my classes.

My question is: When I apply to a specific department in the university, especially VERY competitive ones, and explain about this, will this look bad? It's not too late to add in another 3-credit course, but that won't be transferable to the college I want to go to, so it seems a waste of money.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I don’t think it matters, as long as you have the required credits to transfer to the University. I remember I only took 9 units but 1 didn’t count (Intermediate Algebra), but I still got accepted and they didn’t ask why I was only taking that amount.

May I know if that was for transferring directly into the department from your previous college, or were you already under general admission there and applying to the department separately?

It wasn’t separate for me, I just applied to the university and got into my department. For my school only certain majors are like that; for example Computer Science or Business.

Ahh I see. I wonder if it will be weighted differently if I’m applying to a department after about half a year of completing the major pre-requisites there first. Thanks anyway :)

Since you’re international, probably.
