<p>So, I'm in my junior year and just got 2250 on my SAT (M-800/CR-700/W-750). However, my GPA is pretty low (UW-2.8/W-3.3). This is because I was out for multiple surgeries and also tend to get sick, which has resulted in a high amount of absences (all excused). How are my chances at going to a 4-year university? I have exceptional grades in my Math/English/Engineering classes, but things like P.E./Music/Spanish/French (things you really need to be there to pass) have brought me down. I want to major in Computer and/or Petroleum Engineering. All answers/responses are appreciated!</p>

-I have participated in sports each year (Football, Wrestling, and Baseball).
-I have over 300 community service hours.
-I attend a competitive high school.

<p>I was in a similar predicament and what I found was it’s basically fine. I got into all of the schools I applied to but I made sure they all said that sat/act scores were as important or more important to them than gpa/class rank. You’ll be fine for attending a 4 year, but not HYPSM (which I’m sure you know). You can get into a lot of good schools, though.</p>
<p>Yes, focus on schools that want high test scores, so they’re more forgiving on GPA.</p>
<p>ECs won’t likely matter to these schools.</p>
<p>However, since you get sick a lot, how will you manage Eng’g classes. You can’t really miss those.</p>
<p>What about your budget? How much will your parents pay?</p>
<p>Merit scholarships won’t be generous without the good GPA to go with the SAT.</p>
<p>And, often, the schools that give less weight to GPA don’t give great need-based aid.</p>
<p>What is your home state?</p>
<p>Is that your weighted GPA and includes this semester? Does that include all classes?</p>

-I haven’t missed any days this year due to sickness (it was Freshman/Sophomore year, and that’s what brought down my GPA).

-UW-2.8/W-3.3 are my overall GPAs. I’m pulling a 3.9 (on the 4.0 scale) for this semester, which is the only reason my weighted GPA is above 3.0.</p>

<p>Great! Do they know how much colleges cost these days? They can cost up to $60k per year. Make sure that they know this and that’s ok. There was a post awhile back where the grandma had told the family that she had a college fund for her grandchild, so she told them not to worry about money. Turns out Granny had no idea how much college costs had risen, so her fund wasn’t nearly enough. </p>
<p>So, check and make sure they know, and/or check to find out how much they’ll pay each year. They may be thinking about the cost of instate publics or something.</p>
