I currently live in Taiwan and study in a public school here, but I want to go to the U.S. or Canada for college. I’d probably get around a 2000+ for my SAT, but my GPA would be about 2.0. The thing is, in my school here 2.0 is about average, the teachers don’t give really high scores to students (the top student of the year would get about below 3.5)
I was wondering if my GPA would ruin my chances of I applying to good colleges? Would they put a lot of emphasis on my GPA?
Yeah definitely your GPA could hurt your chances. Schools put a lot of emphasis on your GPA. Is your GPA UW?
I understand that Taiwanese schools are very competitive, but admission to American universities from Asian countries is even more competitive. You could undoubtedly get into a “good college,” if you have a flexible concept of “good.” If you think “good” means one of the 20-50 out of 3000+ four-year colleges that have name prestige overseas, then I’m afraid your prospects are not great. Wait until you have some actual test scores for better advice, though. Nobody has ever been admitted on the basis of predicted scores.
@Jr12317 Oh…yes it’s UW
Wow, your school must be difficult. Always take test from the BB. If you are getting 2000 on your practice tests, then yeah it could open some doors but the GPA is very important. That 2.0 will be your cum?
@woogzmama I was thinking maybe UC Irvine…? I did take mock exams in cram school but you’re right though, I might not score that high during the actual exam
Depending upon how your GPA translates into the UC system, to apply for any UC, you need a UC GPA of 3.4 or above to even apply. Even with meeting the minimum, UCI loves high GPA’s and are more forgiving on lower test scores so depending upon your GPA, it may not be possible. I suggest if you have a counselor, see what your GPA would be for US admissions. Good Luck.
@Jr12317 sorry I didn’t get that, what cum?
Yeah it’s private and really competitive, I’m in the gifted/talented class and look at where it got me lol
What part haha?
I meant the blue book or the official SAT study guide and by CUM, I meant your GPA from freshman until senior year.
@Gumbymom oh I didn’t know that~ thanks for the advice, I’ll look for a counsellor and see what I can do to at least apply
@Jr12317 ohh okay got it
I’m still in my junior year, but my math got worse this semester so I’m not sure what grade I’ll get
So they’ll be looking at my 9~12th grade GPA?
Yep.
@Jr12317 but I thought I have to apply for college before the end of the year? Doesn’t that mean i wouldn’t even have my senior year’s GPA?
You should go to any UC website and figure out your UC-weighted GPA, using their own system. Out-of-state applicants must have a UC-weighted GPA of at least 3.4 to qualify for admission to any campus.
UC’s only use 10-11th grades for their UC GPA calculation. You will self-report 9th grades and list in progress Senior year classes, but they are also not used for GPA calculation (may be different for International Students depending upon your school year cycle). Senior year grades are used to see if meet the course requirements and to maintain provisional admission. I suggest you check with a counselor whom is knowlegeable about your particular situation.
Oh, forgot about that. Sometimes they ask to send until junior year and then they ask for the final GPA which will be from freshman year to senior year. And as @Gumbymom stated, They do a UC GPA calculation.
