Low income student, immigrant first gen. Looking for exciting intellectual environment. [FL, 3.9/1400, physics & philosophy]

Demographics: Male, Floridian, low income student, permanent resident (recent status, I was an asylee), first generation (5 years) (immigrant, not college. Although my parents did not graduate from an US institution), and latino

Took 3 DE last year with UF (developmental psych (88), intro to engineering and astronomy (A in both))
Took 10 AP in the past ( got 3 in two exams (AP physics 1 sophomore year, and AP seminar Junior), one 5 in AP Spanish lang, and the rest 4s)
The classes were: AP physics 1, physics C mechanics, and AP Calculus AB, lang, world, apush, macro, and psych
Took all my other courses honors, with only having Hope (PE requirement) and digital multimedia as normal classes.
This year I’m taking

Stats
Lit
Along with intro to programming and calc II through UF

Awards:
Scholar of a state wide organization for low income high achievers
Academic letter
AP scholar distinction
Questbridge prep scholar
Pin award

Extracurriculars:
Created and manage my own tutoring program at my school. I created it as I perceived how people struggled with classes, and office hours were usually too crowded.
Internship on quantum hardware (wrote review paper) with UF professor. This was a position that I got after having a project and good grades in a year long Quantum computing course that was paid by a scholarship of IBM. The course was taught by MIT and Berkeley (along other schools) grad students.
Internship at entrepreneurship think tank (created a business study with two peers)
Finance chairman for interact
Teen court attorney
Library ambassador
School embassador
Worked at howl o scream

Essays/LORS/Other:
I’m making my essay about my work as a scare actor, and how it relates to me overpassing the fear of fleeing the country after death threats to my dad while being personally lonely. I went in deep about how academics became my way to conecting to humanity, the core reason for which I want to obtain a PhD in nuclear physics and do energy research.

Letter of recommendation from my physics (AP 1 and C) teacher and English (Lang and Lit)
My physics teacher talked about how I overcame the challenge of their class even without being fluent in English.
I don’t really know the topic of my other LoR, but I really trust this teacher.

Schools: List of colleges, ED/EA/RD, etc:
ED Swarthmore (Loved their college after attending their fly in. I really think it aligns perfectly with my goals and preferences)

EA
U of Miami (applying solely because they have merit scholarships and are a need met institution)
UF

RD: Williams, Amherst, some other LAC such as Pomona and Reed.

If you have any other recommendations, I would be more than happy to hear them.
I usually prefer small colleges with great financial aid (I need it in order to attend, my predicted EFC is probably 0)
I am also looking for a stimulating intellectual environment (with this, I don’t mean people believing they are better than others. I am looking for an environment of authentic people that feel passionate about their academics, one in which you can have hours of conversations that go from philosophy to math and physics.)

I would be really grateful to hear other points of view.

I forgot to mention, I’m also applying to state schools as safeties: UCF, USF, and FSU (not so safety tho).

What level of Bright Futures do you qualify for?

Did you have your permanent resident status in time for a Questbridge application?

@Mwfan1921 can green card holders apply for Questbridge…although the deadline has passed…

double post.

Wesleyan has a higher rate of admission for male applicants:

Consider Haverford, Hamilton, Carleton.

Congratulations on all the many things you’ve done in high school. Did you speak English before coming to the U.S.? If not, I would definitely mention that in your apps.

Below are some schools that your family might want to run the Net Price Calculator on. There were four that I’ve identified as being particularly financially generous, but all the schools listed below are more generous than average.

Extremely Likely (80-99+%)

Likely (60-79%)

Toss-Up (40-59%)

  • St. Olaf (MN): About 3k undergrads, in the same town as Carleton and students can take classes at the other college

Lower Probability (20-39%)

  • Colorado College: About 2200 undergrads
  • Davidson (NC): About 1900 undergrads
  • Vassar (NY): About 2500 undergrads

Low Probability (less than 20%)

  • Bowdoin (ME): About 1900 undergrads…among the more financially generous
  • Carleton (MN): About 2100 undergrads, in the same town as St. Olaf and students can take classes at the other school
  • Colby (ME): About 2300 undergrads…appears particularly financially generous
  • Grinnell (IA): About 1800 undergrads
  • Hamilton (NY): About 2100 undergrads
  • Middlebury (VT): About 2800 undergrads
  • Washington & Lee (VA): About 1900 undergrads…extremely financially generous
  • Wesleyan (CT): About 3400 undergrads…among the more financially generous

I would be a Florida academic scholar (I think that’s the name, I know I qualify for the 100% one), but it only covers tuition… The cheapest part of attending college in a Florida public.
I did qualify. I didn’t apply because I wanted to do ED one school. Would have made sense if that school was not free loans.

Also, I heard that it was more competitive go through questbridge

Yes, I didn’t.
One LoR talks about me succeeding in AP physics while I was still struggling with English.
At the same time, I had good grades in English and a 4 in the AP lang exam, so I have those two sides.
And thank you so much for those recommendations. I haven’t looked at Colorado college, I thought their population was higher.
Again, thank you

Schools that meet need that might be more suitable with your test score - but meet needs means different to all and the $0 EFC could hurt (too expensive for schools - but look at programs like these - below. Confused, did you apply via Questbridge?

Franklin and Marshall
Holy Cross
Lafayette
Lehigh
Occidental

You may also want to look at Berea.

Here’s Every College That Offers 100% Financial Aid (prepscholar.com)

You have until you graduate to apply. If you have completed all the requirements, it makes no sense no to apply as it is free and there is no penalty if you don’t use it. If you got to Flagler, you can use BF. (or any school in Florida).

You may not get into your ED school, they may not give you full financial aid. You just never know. Apply for BF. It is tuition, fees, and books at the academic scholar level.

Did you apply through Questbridge?

You have a very compelling application. You have definitely challenged yourself with your classes, and your stats and scores are quite impressive considering your relative newness to English! I think you have a great shot at Swarthmore. I really hope they take you. Get a lot of other apps ready, though, and don’t procrastinate because you need backup plans and need to spend time making your essays great. Based on what you said, and knowing about these schools, I really like Davidson, Carleton, & Hamilton for you. Please look into those three for RD as well as the other great options folks listed.

With respect to your particular interests, Hamilton is notable for offering a summer program in philosophy (which is open to students from other schools), which may reflect the strength of its department overall. Wherever you attend college, you may want to keep this program in mind.

Oh, I meant Questbridge.
I will be applying for bright futures probably next spring after knowing acceptances results (in the case I have to go to a Floridian school)

Thank you so much. I’ll keep it in mind

So you had a chance to apply to 15 great schools on a full ride but didn’t and threw all your hopes into one - which may or may not be a full ride ?

Just making sure I understand.

This reads a bit critical to me. This student is low income and has a number one favorite, Swarthmore, which is a meets-need school. They will likely get a very low EFC. Why not assume the family is comfortable with the EFC/ED choice and understands the decision, and supports the student giving up a full ride through QB match that might be to a school that is not a favorite? Many families , even low income families(speaking as a former full pell grant kid), do not make decisions purely on financial differences or guarantees.

Not being critical at all. I’m trying to understand the situation - because they OP mentioned QB but then said he didn’t apply because he had an ED - so i’m asking to understand.

That said, if it’s Swat, couldn’t the student have done QB and listed Swat #1?

Honestly, I’m just trying to understand - as you can see from questioning throughout, several posters are confused a bit.
