My unweighted GPA is 4.00 and weighted GPA is 4.26
I am a Senior in a large public high school in Texas.
I am in the top 19% as my class is filled with overachieving seniors taking all the possible AP/ Honors classes.
SAT- 1520( 720 CRW/ 800 Math)
ACT- 35 C
SAT II- Math level 2- 790
Chemistry- 800
Biology- will be taking
AP world history-5
I have taken 6 APs this year.
I did my high school in 4 different schools in 4 different cities( some in India and the others in Houston, Texas). Hence, a lot of my classes were not explicitly labelled as AP/ Honors and were all in completely different curriculums, even though their rigor was equal to or sometimes even more than AP classes.
I am planning to apply to UT Austin for their Neuroscience program and Plan II. I am slightly worried as I’ve heard that UT Austin highly values hs rank and the Plan II gets a lot of kids in the top 4-5% of their hs classes. What do you guys think are my chances of getting in? Should I apply for an easier major?
UT Austin is a reach for those not in the auto admit category.
How are your ECs and community service? Besides your GPA, you have some pretty solid test scores. If Neuroscience is something you’re passionate about, go for it and maybe select an “easier” second choice major if you’re worried that you might not get into Neuro (keep in mind, one of your majors MUST be from the College of Liberal Arts in order to apply to Plan II). There are very few spots for non-auto admits so pour your heart out on those essays/short answers and you may be able to find success in applying. Best of luck!
@freshmesh167, when did they change the policy about having to apply to a COLA major for Plan II. My DD was accepted 4 years ago with a CE or CS major.
Good luck! You have a good profile, but as a non-auto admit, your chances for UT and especially plan II are quite low. Many students at my D’s school with great profiles similar to yours but not in the top 7% did not get in last year.
As a non auto-admit, your chances are very low.
DO apply but keep your expectations low.
What you should be doing right now is work on finding affordable colleges that would welcome you. Those would either be OOS public universities or private universities, both in and out of state (look into Hendrix, UAlabama, Trinity U, Colorado State, ASU Barrett, UDenver…)
UTDallas AES would be likely for you, too.
Because of grade inflation. your GPA is only meaningful when compared with the rest of your HS class. If a 4.0/4.2 only gets you into the top 19%, well…
@GTAustin Sorry, I was a little unclear. A Liberal Arts major (whether it’s Plan II or another COLA major) must be one of your two major choices for the Plan II application to show up on MyStatus.
