I got a 2120 SAT superscore and I am ranked 1 / 500 in my class. My school is moderately competitive, we send 1-2 to HYPS every year and most go to the UCs.

I was talking to my counselor and she said, "That SAT score is low for being #1, you should be embarrassed"

Is it really that low for being #1?

From an adcoms perspective, what is more appealing:

Ranked # 1 and 2120 SAT
Ranked in top 5% (rank not specified) and 2200 SAT

I was talking to my counselor and she said, “That SAT score is low for being #1, you should be embarrassed”

They ought to be embarrassed for having said that. How rude. You are more than just one number. Remember that and you will go far! It’s a respectable score and they ought to be ashamed to have said that to a student. You obviously have worked very hard to rank 1 out of 500.

Good luck and let that one slide right by. =)

The valedictorian of my school last year made relatively the same SAT as you. And she was definitely smart and respected and got a great scholarship into an okay college.

That score’s about average for Ivy Leagues, so it’s a perfectly respectable score and hardly embarrassing. There’s no harm in trying to raise it with a little more study, though! It all depends on where you plan on applying and how much you think you can maximize your application.

But to be honest, if you have the work ethic and intelligence to be 1/500, theres no reason you can’t bump that SAT score up 100+ points.

You can put the time in, study and learn the test just like you can learn any AP material in school.

2120 + valedictorian are stats worthy of plenty of top schools, but if you’re hoping to be one of the few students from ur school accepted into an ivy league, that SAT score might end up hurting ur chances.

Your counselor is rude to say that and in my opinion you should tell that is rude to say.
Your score is great but it will be a little hard to get in HYP

Our valedictorian last year had a math/CR score of 1440, and got into Princeton, Harvard, and Stanford. A standout application wouldn’t help, though. Good luck!

That’s so stupid. Your counselor is a jerk for saying that.

2120 is a great score. My valedictorian got a 2060. Second in the class got a 2330. So, I mean, really, it ranges. And you really shouldn’t feel bad about that. Since when is top 3% in the nation bad?

Just a thought – it’s possible that the OP didn’t study for the SAT as much as he could have.

At my high school, the ones who scored the highest were indeed the ones who prepped (myself and a few friends prepped and all ended up with high 1500’s on the old SAT), whereas the ones who were smart but did not study as hard still did well, but not outstandingly so compared to what we were clocking.

Dude, Im Valedictorian at my school and I only have a 1910. Why? Im horrible at multiple choice exams. But give me an essay on history or literature, I can do pretty well.

Maybe you would do better on the ACT? Anyway, a 2120 won’t keep you from getting an acceptance, no matter where, it simply will add more stress onto the other parts of your application.
