I recently received my SAT scores and was a little disappointed with my 2190, since I don't plan to take it again. I received 760 m, 740 cr, and 690 w (w/ an 8/12 essay), which would have been fine except that I plan to be a writer & major in English. Obviously I'm good at math (I qualified for the AIME this year), and it's fun but it's not my passion. Anyways, I'm hoping that stellar essays could counterbalance the low writing score, and I also plan to take Math II, Lit, and Physics SAT IIs this fall. What scores would I have to get on those to have a chance at Yale, and will my essay plan work? How does Yale weight the writing portion?

I have also taken the ACT and don't have results back yet (except for the 29 from a few years ago, but I'm particularly hopeful that I have a good writing score because my SAT one is so low). I think my GPA is 3.8 uw, 4.1 w, and my class rank is in the top 5%.

bump Perhaps I buried the questions too deeply...

mainly I'm concerned about how seriously Yale takes the SAT writing score. Would they scoff at good app essays and say "Well, the SAT score shows that she couldn't have written this herself..."

I'm not sure any colleges takes the writing score too seriously yet...it is still mainly based on Math and CR, and Writing may be looked at more like a subject test until time has passed to see the percentiles for scores.

690 is really not that low. I mean if the admissions officers like the rest of your application, they're not going to say ew look at that 690, we're not admitting her. Heck I got into yale and my math SAT score was lower.

If you're worried, just do well on the english lit SAT II, even though that's more like CR. And also right good essays. They will definitely believe you wrote them b/c 690 is not at all an idiot's score. don't worry.

Yay, thanks! I was a little worried that a writer with the weakest part of the SAT score in WRITING might have a problem.
