Lower Student for CAS

hello, so I'm wondering what my chances are at the college of arts and sciences. I'm a little sub par, i know. but i like my essays and so did my teachers.

Location: CA

ACT: math 28 and english 32

AP's: Span- 5 Eng- 4 US History- 3

GPA: 3.28

ECs listed on app: football, track, was in 2 clubs, and work

Job/Work Experience: did finances that were really receipts at a family friend's company and also had a job there too

Essays (subject and responses): pretty darn good, and on not-great life experiences.

Teacher Recs: better than great

Counselor Rec: great

School Type: Private, does not rank

Ethnicity: Hispanic, I hope this helps a lot.

Gender:M

thanks a lot

oh yeah, i'll be applying undecided too

Remember that you're applying to an Ivy. Their expectations will be high, especially for CAS, which is one of the tougher schools. You'll need to play your cards right, and advertise your most appealing aspects (URM,, any significant EC's, etc.). It'll be tough, but show that you really made an effort and that you have a passion for the school, and I think you have a fair shot. Good luck! ^_^

seriously? yeah i figured CAS would be the toughest. hopefully the stuff behind the numbers can help like recs and essays and maybe even being hispanic a little. thanks

I know exactly what you mean in feeling a bit sub par, but I just can't let the thought of going to cornell go in my mind...not to mention being hispanic, lol

well i just sent in the app, man it'd be something. i'd love it, even if it is ithaca which doesn't sound bad at all

Hey, a lot of people think the key into the Ivy League is in the numbers. It's not. It's in the character; everything about you, how you portray yourself to the adcoms. I don't mean to brag, but I got 2210 SAT and 33 ACT and got the boot applying ED, and I've seen people with far better scores get the bad news too. The numbers help strengthen your argument to the adcom that you deserve to go to Cornell and will make good use of the opportunity; great stats are often just a by-product of dedication to academics, in a way. They certainly are important, but don't define your odds of success. Be sincere and honest, and don't try to excuse or apologize for your shortcomings. Try to show off the very best in you, and if you truly want to go not simply because of its prestige and name, maybe fortune will smile on you. Just give it your all, and put it out there on the table.

[EDIT] Just saw your last post... I guess it's kinda late now, haha. Hopefully you did the best you could. I hope you get better news that I did come April.

ya in the essay i talked about how i can utilize the resources in the school, and all taht stuff, so hopefully i did do all that.

do they only look at the 1600 sat

bump any thoughts?

nobody knows,

the adcoms are mysterious these days

so basically it's chance now if you qualify

GPA <--- Might hurt you.
Your GPA represents the amount of work and how well you worked compared with your transcript/classes. If it's hovering above 3, you might not be that competitive, but not out of the running, and possible admissions can see through that if you can explain somehow.
GPA > SAT (Importance)
SAT can be studied for and even hire a tutor. So it's not a best measure to show how well you did in school for four years.
Private School
Since you went to private school, I do not know how they will change their expectations, but they might expect you to have taken more opportunities like lots of EC's compared to a public school (inner city) where it's hard to be in many EC's and such. But that's my opinion.
If you application/essay doesn't show that you have tried to take up opportunities to elevate yourself, then it might hurt you.
But you will never know. Doesn't hurt to try.

ya my courseload is pretty tough too

Tboonepickens couldn't have put it better. Adcoms can be like raving schizophrenic maniacs when it comes to the sensibility of their decisions sometimes (and I'm not talking about me being rejected). Cornell's not the only one. They sometimes seem to like it when people struggle in school for some reason, dunno why. This year the ED results at top schools are just plain scary... It's like there's some sort of gigantic cult-like organization of adcoms from top schools who all got together and made a conspiracy to implement a new method of choosing students, which no one knows but probably involves dice and fishing poles.

But seriously, just hope you get in, since there's not mcuh you can do now. I'd certainly try other colleges too, because your app is far from crappy; it'd be considered impressive at a lot of places, I'd imagine. Hope for the best!

"Adcoms can be like raving schizophrenic maniacs when it comes to the sensibility of their decisions "

LOL

Go ahead and laugh, but deep down you know it's true.

:P

Be sure to let us know if you're in!!

i shall do that. for sure

bump10char. i'm quite curious
