I know there are threads on here that pertain to related topics but I want to focus in on just the middle-lower tier combined degree programs.

I'm curious to know if people think they are worth it? I'm talking about programs such as UConn's BS-MD, WSU MedStart, VCU's program, etc. (in comparison to just taking the normal route)

What do you think?

(I use the word 'lower' carefully because I know that all med schools are tough to get into and all BS-MD programs are very difficult to get into in their own right.)

From my D’s experience it was worth it to be in a program that allowed to apply out. Security feeling has helped her to get good MCAT score and be confident during Med. School Interviews. Knowing that you have one spot, when everybody around have just hopes is great. She has couple more acceptances now after she has applied to very few schools, nowhere near the number of regular applicant. And she could afford to be very choosy. According to her, being in a program and having earned one spot has put her in more control of Med. School application process than she would be otherwise. That is without mentionning that she has had incredible experiences at her UG, that were way beyond her expectations while not paying tuition because of Merit Scholarships. It is very personal decision. The most important is to find good match, the place where you would be able to pursue all your goals, including the non-academic ones (travel abroad, Greek life?) and the ones that you might have outside of science, like music, language or whatever else.
