Whats the lowest sat score you've heard a person who got accepted to uchicago having?

what do you think got them in?

I have no idea, really, since my own SAT scores (out of 1600) were above-average but not completely stellar (1440, and a 2240 out of 2400--'twas all lost in math), but I am interested in reading this, so here's a gratuitous kick!

I can say that according to collegeboard.com, the middle 50% for CR was 670-770, while the middle 50% for math was 660-760. I am above the CR middle 50% but below the math 50% according to that definition.

I have the lowest score (out of 2400) that I've seen self-reported on the Chicago boards at CC. So I win, unless somebody else wants to take my place. Nobody has, yet. It's been over two years :-D

FWIW, my scores are DEFINITELY not the lowest that any student has ever been admitted with. They fall-- even if just barely-- in Chicago's midrange.

What "got me in" is a cocktail of ingredients that "got" everybody else in. That combination includes:

Proof of long-term and consistent ability to aim high and reach those aims. (Read: a transcript with good grades in tough classes).

Long-term para-academic interests in extracurriculars that I found ways to express. (As in, I joined clubs and did things that demonstrated my interests rather than just said that I had these interests with no evidence to back it up).

Essays that were honest and demonstrated my personality and my academic passion.

Teacher recs that (probably) confirmed such passion. Both of my teachers knew me as a student and as a person, and I had done out-of-class projects with both of them, so even though I have never read my recommendations, I know that there was a lot of room for my teachers to be precise about me.

i was below the middle 50% for CR and i got in :)
the above post sums it all up though.

Unalove, if you don't mind me asking, what was your score ?

It doesn't matter what her score was! She's at Chicago, kicking butt and taking names. Do your best, make the essays sing and love the place.

Really! I am so tired of the "stats" obsession here! SAT scores are really impoverished, uninteresting information. When you have a chance to judge people by their actual accomplishments -- as reflected in many essays, in detailed recommendations, and in the record of four years of day-in, day-out work, why in the world would you care a whole lot about what she did in three hours one Saturday morning on a totally artificial test?

The SAT is helpful for understanding what a student's grades and achievements may mean if one is comparing different high schools, and for showing a certain type of verbal and mathmatical facility that can pass as potential if a student has not been educated in a good environment. But it's not learning anything, or writing anything real, or solving any real problems, or studying, or persevering, or any of the myriad things that real students do in college and in life.

The evidence is that selective colleges don't care all that much about it, within a broad range. You shouldn't, either.

"Do your best, make the essays sing and love the place."

Yeah, well I did my best, my essays sung...to me at least, and i'm already past in love with the school and have moved on to 'infatuated'.

But I know for a fact that my scores fall way below the usual standard of accepted applicants, and however nice it may be to imagine that 'scores really don't count!' and 'people overstate stats!' (usually proclaimed by people who'ved scored in pretty comfortable areas) I'd like to know if precedent shows whether I have half a shot in hell or none at all.

I might be close, i'm below the average. I'm hoping to get in based largely on the difficulty of my classes and my essays (and i know one stellar rec. at least).
my sat was 1320/1600 (680 CR, 640 M).

my CR score was 640.

I am in the same position. Some of the people that are saying their scores are below average are like WAY above my scores haha. I've taken the SAT 3 times. It sucks because I know I am capable of doing just as well as other students that are accepted to U of C, but when they see my SATs I know they will question my academic capabilities. I knew I was going to do horrible on the test, so I took a lot of difficult classes to show that I can handle the rigorous work at U of C. I knew I sort of had to. Last year I took 4 IB classes, 1 AP class, and 4 community college classes, not to mention my non-honors courses. I'm hoping they don't just shoot me down for my scores...

See, I agree with that idea that the SAT is just one more way to attempt at measuring that potential for academic improvement. I mean, obviously the SAT is quite imperfect in measuring one's academic ability, but I believe that there does need to be some sort of standardized measuring stick, per se, to hold applicants against, especially as grade inflation becomes crazier and crazier.

That said, spirit will outweigh stats at any school worth its salt, and I think that UChicago follows this doctrine.

Just one more point- I think that it doesn't matter so much what your overall SAT score is; rather, I think that the individual sections are (or should be) looked at more carefully in comparison with the student. In my case, for example, I'm very reading/writing oriented and I made that clear on the rest of my app, and so it means more for me that I have a 760 CR/ 770 writing score, both of which are fine scores. But, my low, 610 in Math shouldn't really mean as much, since I'm not exactly a mathematician. Now, if an intended math major had that score, maybe that would be a bit of a red flag to the adcom, but my 610 probably didn't hurt me as much.

Hopefully, that made at least some sense; I'm tired :)

For the class of 2012, 11% had a SAT score below 1190/1600. University of Chicago College Admissions | Incoming Class Profile

I'm in the 1% range with SATs and 8% with ACTs. It will literally be a miracle if I get in haha.. Good thing I have Harvard as a back up and MIT as my safety. But I am STILL waiting for my delayed December SAT scores. I'm so mad because I thought I did so well this time and I still don't know my scores. I haven't sent my ACTs or SATs yet because I wanted to wait for my DEC scores.. I don't know if should I send my OLD scores just in case...

I'm hijacking this thread sorry lol.

@ infinity: I think that makes perfect sense, really. I double-800'd CR and writing; that was easy; I could've done it with my hands tied behind my back. I only 640'd math, though, which sort of disappointed me because my math grades and ability at math are much higher than that score would probably suggest. However, I don't want to be a math major or anything else like it, so I figure the 800-800 is what is impressive-ish, if you want to call standardized test scores impressive.

In reference to Chicago, one should keep in mind that admissions will never see the writing score.
