I am an incoming high school senior, and my first choice school is Loyola University Chicago. I am planning on majoring in either journalism or communications. I recently discovered that I am not going to be eligible for very much, if any, financial aid. Therefore, I need to get as much scholarship and grant money as possible to pay for my education. Important stats about me include:
I have weighted GPA of over a 4.0
My current ACT score is a 28 (on my first try), but I have two more chances to take it-- after ACT prep, I'm realistically expecting a 30-31.
I am involved in National Honors Society, National English Honors Society, National Spanish Honors Society, Academic Bowl, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and am the editor of the school newspaper. I was also involved in theater my freshman year.
I have about 80 volunteer hours thus far, but between my required hours for school and the hours I've done and am doing over the summer, I expect quite a few more.
I volunteer at an animal shelter on a regular basis and at a soup kitchen during the school year.
I hold down a part-time job.
Loyola's average ACT score is a 27 and their average GPA a 3.7. Their average merit-based award is about 23,000--but out of the 52,000 per year total, I need to cover about 35-40k.
Since they don't stack scholarships, what are the chances of this?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here is the common data set for LUC. http://www.luc.edu/media/lucedu/institutionalresearch/cds/CDS%202013-14.pdf Did the school tell you that the average merit based award was $23000? From the CDS, it looks like it’s more like 14,200. Athletic scholarships are closer to 32k. But the numbers from the CDS that are more concerning are where the admits fall on the ACT. More than 20% of the enrolled students are in the 30’s on the ACT. With so many kids in the 30’s, my guess is a 31 wouldn’t put you in for a top scholarship.

According to the LUC website merit scholarships go up to 18k per year. <a href=“Undergraduate Scholarships: Financial Aid Office: Loyola University Chicago”>http://www.luc.edu/finaid/scholarships_auto.shtml

You look like a great kid and a lot of schools would love to have you. I would start looking around at some other more affordable schools. Try to get your ACT to a 32 as that will open up some merit doors for you.

<<<but out="" of="" the="" 52,000="" per="" year="" total,="" i="" need="" to="" cover="" about="" 35-40k="">>></but>

You are essentially looking for a full tuition scholarship then. Your stats wont likely be hard enough. the school may only award a few of those full tuition awards, and they would go to higher scores.

are your parents saying that they will pay 15k or so per year? more? less?

study and retest…aim for a 32 act …or a 1400 M+CR SAT

what is your major and career goal?

what do you like/love about Loyola?

Hey, guys! I never got any notifications about anyone replying, but I just wanted to let you guys know that I actually do qualify for sizeable financial aid–it’s a long story, but I got confused over how my non-custodial parent’s income would factor. It looks like Loyola is going to be doable for me. Thanks for everything!
