LSA Average GPA

Lol @ lolzy

I just find it ridiculous that the average GPA for a Ross kid is 3.6. It used to be that a 3.6 in college was considered VERY GOOD. In the context of Ross and other schools that similarly hand out A’s, a 3.6 is simply average. In LSA, you can’t even crack cum laude (top 25%) with a 3.6. It gives Ross kids yet another undeserved edge over LSA/CoE kids.

^If they don’t give those crazy high GPAs though, then Ross kids are at a disadvantage to kids from other B-Schools.

I’m aware of that. I dislike the ridiculous grade inflation at all schools that do it.

"In LSA, you can’t even crack cum laude (top 25%) with a 3.6. "

Giants, you just made a point against your argument. Your statement shows that LSA also experience severe grade inflation in that 3.6 is so common that it’s not even top 25% cum laude level. The lower the cum laude GPA cut off, the less the grade inflation. For instance, in COE, top 25% (Cum laude) is at 3.25 because of the lack of grade inflation.

"If they don’t give those crazy high GPAs though, then Ross kids are at a disadvantage to kids from other B-Schools. "
No they won’t. Wharton’s average GPA is 3.1. Don’t see kids there at a disadvantage…

How about math? What do you guys think the average GPA is for math? I am transferring in as a math and computer science major, and I would like to do EGL. How hard would it be to maintain a 3.6 in CompSci and math ( through LSA honors )?

The lower math classes are hard (calc 1-4) then I hear it gets much easier.

Really? I have calc 1-4 done with, but I hear that was the easy part. I hear analysis is a real pain in the butt. I just want to know if taking honors math is a real GPA killer.

Blackpen, I think the only reason you heard that is because the crappy math students (including a good amount of premeds) stop taking math by calc 4 at the latest. The only people left after that are the ones who are good at or interested in math and therefore are less likely to complain. Also consider the fact that premeds (especially the not-so-bright ones) complain approximately 4657% more than anyone else about ANYTHING and the explanation is complete. :)

Also, Bearcats, remember the Branstrom Freshman Prize from a while ago? They take top 5% from each school (LSA, Engin, etc), not top 5% overall. Just FYI.

Anyways, WolfPackfan, I think what you heard is correct. Most of the upper level math courses I’ve taken/heard from my math major friends are hard (at least the pure ones). They are hard, but they grade leniently. I can’t say for sure whether or not getting a 3.6 will be easy, but I can say that I have not encountered the reputation of honors math being a gpa killer.

Ah yes, I misspoke – worded that one wrong. The point I meant to get across is that a 3.6 in LSA is no where near the 50th percentile (it’s close to 25th, but not quite there). Yes, of course the lower the cum laude the less the grade inflation. If Ross had Latin honors, cum laude would be like 3.8-3.9, ballpark. LSA does not experience severe grade inflation though – avg. is ~3.2. Pretty typical these days. Engineering programs in general push grades way down. Where did you get that Wharton number? In 2004 UPenn’s avg. was 3.44… (latest information from below)

Can’t imagine it’s far off the LSA avg. of ~3.2. Could be a bit higher though… not sure.

False. Curve gets better, material gets much harder.

Understatement.

Nor have I. That is, if you belong in the major.

Perhaps I should have been more clear.
Easier= easier to get an A
Harder= harder to get an A

It’s easier to get an A in calc I-IV than in upper level math. You’re competing against much smarter people after most get weeded out, which (perhaps more than) balances out the easier curve.

The people who struggle to get As in calc 1-4 would get destroyed by the later classes.

^Yep. 10 char
