LSA Honors

Hey everyone!

I was just rejected from LSA Honors, and I’m kind of confused as to why :frowning:

My stats:
GPA 4.0 (eight APs)
ACT 36
2 subject tests, 800 and 790
EC: two summers of university research (co-author of a paper and presented at a symposium), musician with state honors, 400+ hours of volunteering, actively involved in my cultural community
Awards: National Merit Semifinalist, Presidential Scholar Program Nominee (although I guess admissions wouldn’t have seen that), a few other state/school volunteering and music awards

Thought my essays were decent and heartfelt, and students currently in honors said they put less effort into theirs than I did. Recs were solid from what I read.

Just kinda surprised I didn’t even get deferred! If I do similarly well (or not well, I suppose) freshman/sophomore year of college, do you think I’ll receive another rejection from them if I re-apply? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

One thing you will have to understand is that it’s not about you. You are a great student. They just have so many great students to choose from. You can email the honors admissions and let them know how excited you are to be at Michigan and also what can you do to help your chances of getting in the next time you are able to apply.

Michigan also is not a cake walk and I think there is a transition phase that is more challenging the first semester /year that most people think. I wish honors didn’t start till sophomore year so students can get adjusted to University life first.

As the LSA honor is rolling and have multiple rounds, one should not rush in but spend some time on the essays. The first round may be too rush.

Makes sense, thanks so much for your advice!
