First of all, what is the difference? I read the web page about it but still don’t get a solid idea of what each of these are about. Are they separated based on academics or something like that? Which one is better?
Do you mean LSA honor housing versus other residential programs? Besides location, each residential program has its special feature which can be academic focus or common interest. There is one for doing research, one for community service, one for women in science/engineering, etc.
RC is a program within LSA. You can apply to get into the RC after you’re accepted to LSA.
LSA is the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. That’s the division of University of Michigan you are in if you are majoring in English, biology, history, math, chemistry, French, anthropology, art history, etc.
RC is a living-learning community that some LSA students choose to be a part of. In addition to the academic requirements of LSA, the RC has an overlay of requirements. Also, the RC students all live together in East Quad freshman year and sometimes sophomore year as well.
Here’s more info about the RC:

I misunderstood the question. So, you have not submit your application yet.
RC also gives you the feel of a smaller school which would be one of the main reason for students applied to it. They do have some classes separated from other LSA students. It is different from the residential programs I mentioned above which were applied after admission.
So is RC like a residential housing thing? Is it just a community? Does my chance of admission change if I select one over another?
It is more than housing and community although they are essential parts of it. I think it should not affect your admission chance as there is no separated admission stat for that. They should consider your RC request at the time of admission.
Do I have to choose RC in order to live on campus?
@equality4all Did you read the links I provided above? RC is a living-learning community. It is housing PLUS a curriculum.
In answer to your questions:
You cannot “select one over the other.” They are not mutually exclusive. You apply to LSA. Period. If you think you might be interested in the RC, you check the box on the Common App that says RC. Applying for the RC has nothing to do with getting admitted to UMich because you have to be ALREADY ADMITTED to UMich to be considered for the RC.
The RC DOES NOT EVEN KNOW THAT YOU APPLIED TO THE RC – until AFTER you are admitted to LSA. After you are admitted to LSA (if you are admitted to LSA), THEN the RC considers you. Think of the RC an a sub-program of LSA.
NO, you do not have to choose RC to live on campus. Only about 250 people in the freshman class will be in the RC. RC is only one of MANY, MANY housing and living-learning options at UMich.
Here’s more info. Read it thoroughly.

95%+ of freshmen live in dorm. Besides RC, there are other residential programs the provide living/learning communities but with different formats and application procedure. For all the other ones, you apply after admission.
