My son just tried to register for LSA orientation and was only offered two date options. July 29 or 30. Can this be correct? He just received the invite to sign up 4 days ago. Is it truly already full? We have a planed holiday, out of the country, during those dates. Does Michigan reserve any spots for students with schedule conflicts?
Yep. We ran into this a few years back. Call tomorrow! My son went to the last session in August. He still got his classes but had to wait list 2 of them.
I don’t think they make many acceptions. There are class spots held for internationals for what I remember. You don’t want to have your child not get classes they need. In hindsight my son learned quickly how to audit classes, talk to his professors for permison to apply to closed classes and his counsler was great at helping him.
Much easier just signing up and getting their classes. Plus they have to take some tests for placement. Without that they can’t sign up for classes. Curious what they will tell you.

Sorry to hear this happened. We had been advised by an experienced Michigan parent to immediately jump on sign ups as soon as dates are released for anything from Michigan, including Orientation, Parents Weekend, football tickets etc. This is our introduction to life at a large public university. Four days is apparently an eternity there. It makes me dubious about 4 years of always having to be on alert or face being shut out of stuff. I know this didn’t answer your question, but I’m totally commiserating. Good luck getting an orientation date that works.
@PasstheWine. My son’s been here for 2 years and the only thing that seemed to run out fast was orientation. Football tickets - a link gets sent to the students. Yes, once they get it just click and pay. Every year they seem to get better seating also… There’s some point system thing they use.
Parents weekend… We got football tickets through Hillel since we didn’t want to commit through the parents weekend site.(other groups sell football tickets) My kid didn’t really want to do tailgating and other activities just because and some of it is pricy. We did go up and went to the art museum, walked around the town, went to the Arb and went to dinner. Yes, we went to the game but he didn’t want us in the student sections (security tends to be lax on parents weekend). FYI - you can get tickets on stubhub etc and parents post tickets etc. I got tickets last year for an indemand game from someone on this site):.
Getting classes etc has not been a problem going forward.
So honestly the only thing that sold out quickly was orientation for us. But somehow as Michigan explained to us, they haven’t had one kid not get classes or graduate if they wanted to… Lol. I think though you might get some classes out of sequence but it doesn’t seem to matter.
When I just went to register for LSA orientation, there were seats open at almost every date, starting with June 4.
Hi! I called earlier today, and I was told they opened up many new dates for orientation! I would just call and reschedule, because that’s what I did. The sooner the better! Best of luck.
