Has anyone who has already attended orientation learned anything interesting that they would like to share?

My D went to the first orientation session. She said the second day for class scheduling was most stressful. The last day was just confirming the class schedule for registration and finished very early.

My son had orientation on June 4-6. We went to the parent orientation. The LSA advisor gave a pitch on students adapting to college. She said that all of her best students use the math lab, tutors, go for help, etc. Don’t try to do it on your own. Use the resources that you are paying for!

We are attending the orientation and yes the second day scheduling is a little stressful . My son has a 5 in AP cal AB and BC and is confused about taking Cal 2 or Cal 3 .It is a good way to get acquainted with peers and college life .

Thanks for your responses. This is my second son going to college. I remember how odd is seemed when my first son was arranging his classes without his parent’s input (not that we didn’t talk about it in advance). It helps to be warned about the stress.

My D found the registration a bit complex (she’s dual degree so met several times with advising in two schools) but not overly stressful - even though she was one of only a few who couldn’t finalize everything immediately. She said the advisors were very helpful as was doing the tutorials recommended in the orientation info (on “backpacking”/registration). She needed several overrides to complete everything so has continued a bit of back-and-forth with her advisors this week from home, and they have continued to be very responsive. I think her schedule is close to final - finally!

My daughter learned she never has to take calculus again. LOL She was thrilled.

She was also in the first orientation group. She loved her counselor and her peer counselor. She was introduced to two of the professors she will have in the fall.

She had a brief meeting for her learning community, and learned more about how that will run.

Scheduling was very easy, and she was done by 9:15 the last day of orientation. Her counselor contacted her later in the day and was concerned about the timing of a class, so she switched sections at that point.

Her counselor had read her admission file, so she was very informed on my daughter, her ambitions, and how she operates, academically.

It was awesome.

There were four girls sent home from orientation for drinking, though ( one carried out on a stretcher). They had MIP charges, and will have to go to court and face the board at UM. Not. Smart.
