LSA vs COE Michigan Engineering?

I'm an an international school senior, planning on applying to University of Michigan as an international student.
Until a few days ago, I've been preparing to apply to the College of Engineering. However, my counselor told me that it is nearly impossible for me to get in (5% chance) with my GPA and scores (GPA 3.76) (SAT Math:770 Writing: 720 Reading:590) (TOEFL ibt 116 ). Our counselor is new to his job and I don't really trust his judgements. So I'm depending on College Confidential to help me come to a solid decision.
Would it be more beneficial for me to apply to LSA and attempt to transfer to COE or would it be better for me to apply straight to COE??
PS: I'm planning on submitting my application before November 1st, priority admissions

I think a lot of it will depend on if you need financial aid or not. Also, how rigorous was your schedule (does you school have AP classes, or if not what can you say about the difficulty of your schedule?)

I can tell you it’s easier to get into LSA…

I know someone who applied to LSA planning to transfer to Engineering in 2nd year.
I think it’s much more safe.

No, not always. If you have a strong background in math and science, and a weak background in English, you’re probably better off applying to Engineering. I think LSA is more concerned about a “well rounded student”, while Engineering is more concerned about students who excel in math and science. If you have special accomplishments in math and science, and a high math subscore in the ACT/SAT, you would most likely have a better chance in Engineering. That’s what I concluded from reading stuff on their sites lol.

Querty, what do you mean it depends on financial aid? I’m kinda worried cause I’m pretty poor.

A strong science/math background is considered good for engineering. So it depends on your courseload and course difficulty.
