LSU Tiger Scholarship 10pnt raise

Hi,
I have a question about my scholarship that I hope someone can answer. I applied and was accepted for the Fall 2010 semester at LSU. I qualified for the Tiger Scholarship exempting me from the out of state fee at the time when I applied (and when I believe it was like this when I was accepted) but now on the financial aid site the requirement for the scholarship was raised 10 points, 10 points above what I scored. It was a 1240 requirement (out of 1600). I got a 1240. Now it says 1250 is the requirement on the website. I emailed LSU about this, I am not officially supposed to receive my letter acknowledging my aid until at least a few weeks from now. Do you think I will get the scholarship, since when I applied (and I think when I was accepted) I met the requirements, but now I am off by 10 points? I REALLY hope i am not affected.
Thanks for your help,

From looking at their website it looks like the cut off for the scholarship are 1170 to 1240 for an exemption from half the non resident fee and 1250 to 1320 for an exemption from the whole resident fee.

If the criteria has changed for the 2010-2011 year then I would expect you to fall under the new criteria. The previous criteria was probably for students starting in the 2009-2010 school year. I don’t think the fact that it was a lower cut off when you applied will matter as it it the criteria for the school year that will count. Only they can tell you for sure though. If that is the case then I would ask them if you can still qualify for the higher exemption if you retake the SAT or ACT and score high enough. It would certainly be worth it. (my daughter did this at her university - she retook the ACT after she was accepted and got a much better scholarship, several $000 per year, by increasing her ACT by just 1 point).

Well I’m pretty sure (or atleast i HOPE!) I could retake it and not have an issue, but I’m just wondering if I can get the full scholarship without retaking since the requirement was a 1240 when I applied…I wonder if this issue is black and white or if I can argue my way to a better scholarship. (I would rather argue than retake SAT, but I WILL retake the SAT if that’s the only way to get the scholarship).

To be honest I really doubt you can get it based on what the requirement was on the date you applied. Requirements for scholarships can change from year to year. Eligibility for it will generally be based on the criteria for the scholarship for the academic year you are applying for, rather than the date of your application. Your application was probably somewhat earlier than the average application, before they had published updated data.

Of course it is always worth asking, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

In an effort to permanently fund LSU athletic scholarships in each sport, TAF is offering the opportunity to support the “Foundation of Champions” scholarship endowment program. The purpose of this program will be to provide a perpetual source of financial support for athletic scholarships through a general scholarship endowment fund. The interest generated from the endowed scholarship will be used to offset the scholarship costs for current student-athletes.

Okay well I found out I have until the day before school starts in fall 2010 for them to receive my new sat scores so i got a while to retake. It looks like I probably will have to retake them (they emailed me back and said for this years freshman and my year its a 1250, so I guess they had 08-09 reqs up?), do you think it will be hard at all to go up 10 points? I got M: 570, CR: 670
(W:640, but that doesn’t make one bit of difference for LSU). I didn’t study at all, except for reading a book that took one day. So if I should study, how much do you think I really need to (after all, 10 points isn’t even 1 percentile above me, its the same percentile). I think if I just review for about a day I could go up 10 points, since I should go up that much just having seen the test before, so a day (maybe 2) of review seems sufficient for such an insignificant raise, but if it’s not that easy, let me know. FYI, that was the first time I ever took the SAT and besides the PSAT the year before, I had never taken any practice tests.

LSU doesn’t look at the writing part of the SAT, just reading plus math - do you think it will stay that way? Any idea that they might start using your writing score?

I see you can use an ACT score instead. Hmmm.

you might meet the req by taking the ACT.

my DD’s ACT score was equivalent to her SAT score + 100 points.

When did you apply? If you applied last fall, then LSU must honor whatever was on their site at that time. They aren’t supposed to change their scholarships “mid application season” - that would be misleading.

However, if you applied in the summer, before they posted the scholarship req’ts for the Fall 2010 class, then you have no case.

Contact LSU’s scholarship office, mention when you applied and what was on the website at that time (are you certain that the req’t was lower?)

I don’t care if they had the wrong year’s info up. If that info was on their scholarship page during fall application season, then they must honor it. To not do so, would be close to fraud.
