I'm an incoming freshman, so I'm getting ready to sign up for my classes next year (kind of excited and kind of nervous--crossing my fingers that I get good classes!).

One of the classes I'm thinking of taking is LTSP 2A (aka Spanish Literature I ;) ), since I took the Spanish Placement test and it placed me in Linguistics 1D/Literature 2A. Now, in high school, I only took Spanish I-III (none were honors, but I got A's in all of those classes and really loved learning the language) from my freshman up to my junior year. I didn't take any language classes my senior year, so I was certain when I took the placement test that my grammar would be a bit rusty.

Here's my question to folks--or those who know others--who have taken LTSP2A: would someone with my level of Spanish be fine in this class? According to this link (Intermediate Spanish Language & Culture Program: Courses & Descriptions), it's recommended for those who have had at least one year of college-level Spanish and the course is taught COMPLETELY in Spanish. If you have any other suggestions, hints about the class, experiences, et cetera, they would be much appreciated if posted. :)

NB: If it helps, I'm in ERC, and taking just this one course would fulfill my Language requirement, as opposed to starting all over with another language and taking four classes. I'm going to be majoring in Literatures in English, another reason LTSP would be helpful, since it would cover one of my Literature electives.

Sorry to sound impatient but…no one knows about this class? I really need to find out about it soon–I’ve tried looking up about it on CAPE, Rate My Professors, the Department site… It’d be really good to hear from someone who actually has been in or knows some about this class. It scares me a little. I’m considering LISP 1D, but not sure how much easier it would be for someone who hasn’t taken Spanish for a year…

I took French literature instead of Spanish literature, but I think the structure of the class is pretty much similar between the different languages. If you are not feeling VERY comfortable about your Spanish knowledge, I would suggest taking 1D instead of 2A. There is A LOT of emphasis on grammar and reading (hence it is a literature class), so if you are not at the top of your game, you can fall behind pretty quickly and would be pretty difficult for you to get an A in.

@adl0816 Thank you so much for your reply! I really appreciate it! Just a few questions: did you have a background in French (e.g., any classes in high school)? And did you take the placement test (and thus the literature class was where you got placed)? What actually scares me a little about both classes is the fact that both are taught COMPLETELY in Spanish…having my little “gap year” in the language doesn’t help, I’m sure. :P

@gswhoops w00t, we’re on the same boat! Were you placed in Linguistics 1D as well, or just Literature 2A? BTW, did you take any Spanish classes in high school last year?
ETA: Looking through the professor’s profile on the Lit Department’s site, and it seems she specializes in “19th and 20th century Latin American literature”, so that might give you somewhat of an idea what kind of readings we’ll be getting. Of course, on Rate My Professors, I heard that the class is TA-taught and you only see the professor if you go to OH, so we might get readings outside of that scope of literature.

@jacjac, I got placed in LTSP 2A or higher but no way do I want to take anything higher. I did take spanish all the way through high school and I actually live in mexico so I have to use it on a regular basis but spanish isn’t exactly my subject (I’m a computer engineering major) so I’m definitely going to take it for pass/no pass. I’ve already done some literature in high school so I’m just hoping we get a text I’ve already analysed.

@gswhoops WOW, you definitely sound way more advanced than me. :)

To all: I’m thinking of taking the class as p/np, but wondering whether it will look bad on my transcript since I am an English Lit major and want to get into law school… Thoughts?

Yes, I had an extensive background in French during high school, taking it all four years and taking AP French for two years. However, I did not take the AP test. I was pretty much very comfortable with speaking/writing/reading French. And yes, I did take the placement test, and I think it placed me in LIFR 1D/1DX.

@adl0816 Lucky you! (I’ve always wanted to learn French.) Thank you for posting and answering all of my questions. :)

To all: I don’t think I’m going to take any language classes this year but will hold them off until next fall quarter (my winter and spring quarter classes are already planned out, heh, and don’t include language–WHOO six-unit MMW courses). I’m planning on taking LISP 1D/DX after doing some restudying of the language next summer, but I’m also thinking of studying using the LISP 1D/X book…anyone know the title/author/publisher/edition/anything about it? (Thanks again in advance, all!)
