Has anyone take Spanish 4 or Spanish 25, and/or is doing a Spanish major/minor or a Latin American Studies major? I'm reconsidering a minor in Spanish, and possibly the Latin American Studies major, but I would need to take Spanish 25 before I can take the upper division literature courses. I received a 5 on my AP test in high school, so I could AP out of Spanish 4 and skip right to Spanish 25, but it's been almost two years since I've taken a Spanish course. I've been speaking Spanish on and off informally over the past year. I was thinking I would just review my Spanish grammar over winter break, and try to take Spanish 25 next semester. Would I be ready for the course? How difficult did you guys find either of the courses? Also, any thoughts on the Spanish minor in general, and/or the Latin American Studies major?

I got a 5 on AP Spanish Lang and took Spanish 25 freshman year. Most of the students are native speakers. Sit up front if you think the GSI speaks too quickly. It was a lot of work (ex

Thanks for the response!
Did you find that level of the class was pretty difficult (not talking about workload here, but difficulty, ie in terms of harsh grading, or like you said, the GSI speaking too quickly, etc). Was the fact that were many native speakers in the class make the class more competitive/establish higher standards of expectation?

I thought the grading was fair, but I put a lot of effort in the assignments. Actually I think AP English Lit concepts helped in much of the literary analysis. The readings can be a bit dense and confusing, so wordreference.com will be your best friend. I remember almost everyone bombed the first exam, which was detail-oriented, but the GSI let us take home the graded exam, revise our answers and submit for re-grading. :)

Tip: If you take the class you should set up an international keyboard. This is when you can easily type

Thanks again! And the Spanish keyboard is definitely helpful. I’ve been meaning to set that up for the longest time. Unfortunately, I took AP Spanish Lang in high school, not lit, but I think I can manage. I did read some Spanish literature in high school, and it was kind of confusing/dense, but I dealt with it, so hopefully I can do the same now. As long as the class/readings are somewhat fun, I think I’ll take it. Do you think I need to Phase I the class (I know Spanish classes fill up pretty quickly) or is Phase II okay?

Hey Weebly,

Did you happen to have Alan Jose as your professor?
If so, how are the daily diaries graded?

Thanks!

I would Phase I it.

Yep. Is Alan Jose teaching next semester? I’m pretty sure the entries were graded based on effort and coherence.

Thanks weebly,
i’m taking an Upper division Spanish class with him right now.
I haven’t done the journals and so I am getting worried.

thanks!
