Luther and Augustana (IL) ?

My son is thinking about continuing his sport in college. Both of these schools have his sport and fill a few of his other requirements. Not a lot of discussion about either of these schools on cc...any info / insight you can provide would be appreciated.

I don’t know much about Augustana but I know a fair amount about Luther. I absolutely don’t think your son can go wrong choosing Luther. We know a good number of kids who attend and all are extremely happy. Luther also has a strong and loyal alumni base. The campus is beautiful and the facilities are top-notch. Grads tend to go on and do very well in life. The communities they are located in are very different. Moline is larger; Decorah is small but quaint. PM me if you’d like more specific info

I only know what I’ve seen. Augustana was a real surprise when we visited last summer. After driving across Illinois (flat, corn and bean fields the whole way) we arrived to find it is set in a hilly area where there are buildings up high around the perimeter and a “quad” area below in the middle. It was filled with mature trees and was beautiful. I loved it. My S has one friend who attends there and is very happy. I don’t know anything about the sports.

I know several kids who attend Augie and half a dozen alums. I’ve never heard anything but good about it. It’s a Lutheran school but much more secular in atmosphere than some (eg Wartburg). Both schools have campuses that I’d rate 9 out of 10 on the gorgeous scale.

Thanks for the info. Greatly appreciated.

My niece graduated from Luther in June of 2010. She was in the nursing program and on the softball team. Her coaches anyway were very accomdating and worked with the students schedules. They went to the national tournament in 2010 and the seniors had to miss gradution in order to play. The coaches staged a graduation ceremony for them and the athletic director gave a commencement speech for them.

It was all kind of fun, they graduated in their softball uniforms instead of caps and gowns.

My d went to a cross country camp at Luther several years ago. She really liked that coach and staff (they coach both mens and women’s XC and track and field)

I have never been to Augustana, though the above poster’s description of Moline is very accurate.

I imagine the biggest differences between the schools will be the rural/sort of more urban (as urban as Iowa or northwestern Illinois can be) difference.

We have many friends who have had kids attend Luther. All have been very pleased. It was #2 on our list, but S1 opted for a different Lutheran college (Carthage) because of accessibility to Chicago.

Please keep in mind the logistics of getting to/from the college. This is interesting - click on the interactive shuttle map: http://www.luther.edu/shuttle/
