Many threads have asked about the M-STEM academy and I finally received the email that's all about it. There is plenty of bad with plenty of good; it really is a tough choice.

In order to receive the most benefit as an M-STEM Academy participant, you will be required to fulfill certain program obligations during your first two years as a College of Engineering student. Your full participation in all of the requirements will earn you $3000; $1500 paid at the completion of the summer program, $750 paid at the end of Fall Term 2009, and $750 paid at the end of Winter Term 2010. In addition, we will assist you in gaining either a corporate internship, a paid research opportunity, or employment with the M-STEM Academy Summer Program during the Summer of 2010.

To accept our offer of admission to the M-STEM Academy and confirm your understanding of the program obligations, we ask that you read and sign the following agreement.

I recognize that as an M-STEM Academy participant, I will be required to fulfill the following obligations:

*
I will attend the M-STEM Summer Transition Program, June 22, 2009 August 8, 2009, and adhere to all the guidelines of the program as outlined in the M-STEM Academy Summer Transition Program Handbook. These include: o
Participants must remain on campus, within defined campus boundaries, for the duration of the program with the exception of the optional weekends home (July 3 5 and July 25 26). NO EXCEPTIONS.
o

*
I will reside in Bursley Residence Hall during my first year.
*
I will follow all course scheduling recommendations of M-STEM Academy staff during the first two years. *
I will work closely with M-STEM Academy staff as I plan extra-curricular or part-time employment activities during the academic year. *
I will participate in designated academic support activities during the first two years, including regularly scheduled Supplemental Instruction sessions. *
I will attend all designated personal and professional development forums during the first two years. *
I will meet with M-STEM Academy staff regularly during the academic year to discuss academic progress. *
I will meet with my assigned peer mentor regularly during the academic year. *
I will commit my best effort to all M-STEM Academy activities. *
I will contribute my individual skills and strengths to the overall success of the M-STEM Academy community.

Academic Expectations

*
As an M-STEM Academy participant, I understand I must maintain a term and cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 to remain in good standing. Receiving lower than a 3.0 GPA will result in probation. To assist probation students in the transition to the required 3.0 GPA, there will be weekly sessions with the academic coach and students will follow prescribed actions. *
I understand that I must receive at least a B- in all of the required math courses before proceeding to the next higher level math course. If I do not receive at least a B- in a math course, I will repeat that course.

I acknowledge that I am signing up for the M-STEM Academy in good faith, and that I will make an honest effort to meet the obligations outlined above. I understand that not meeting the obligations can result in a review by M-STEM Academy staff about my continued participation in the program and possible dismissal from the program.

My Comments:
I don't like that you have to take the recommended classes, but I guess they do that to make sure you don't stray off. I do like that they force and help you to keep a 3.0 GPA. I spoke to UMich alum and he told me most of the kids in this group have at least a 3.2 GPA. Another thing is that we are forced to live in North Campus. But mostly everything is for our own good. They basically hold your hand for the first two years of college, which must be nice considering the size.

We hear decisions within the first week of May.
