@firstgen: Wasn’t trying to single you out. I noticed this trend catch on last year. I guess I am in the “let the process play itself out” camp. We will NOT be calling FEDEX this time around either.

BTW, we didn’t find out the gender of either of our children…wonder if there IS a correlation? ;-)

I didn’t want to find out the sexes of my children and I was having two at once. This meant I had to try to think of two boy names and two girl names (never quite got there). Also, neither of my kids looked good in the yellow baby clothes I bought. And I don’t suppose I’ll call FedEx either.

Hahaha! We didn’t find out gender either, and although we will be at the computer at midnight, or 6am, or whatever the earliest option is, we most decidedly WON’T be calling FedEx. (NO judgment implied) :)

Ya know you can just call Exeter and ask how/when they notify applicants! Beats 2nd hand information from last year or farther back.

Having worked for many years in a business similar to fedex, I strongly suggest people think about how their phone calls interrupt the folks trying to get packages delivered. One of those, Would it be OK if everybody did this? things. Save the fedex phone calls for a true emergency.

The person you talk to on the phone has nothing to do with the delivery of the packages. As a matter of fact, they are answering the phone specifically to provide customer service. Placing a phone call is not going to interrupt the flow of packages through the fedex hub nor is it going to impact the driver who is actually making the delivery.

alooknac, what makes more sense, asking people who have the information I need, who choose to hang out in a forum to discuss exactly said information, or bothering the folks who may be deciding my child’s fate?

If my inquiry is bothersome to you, just move along. I don’t appreciate being reprimanded for asking a question. Again: on a forum. associated with the topic. of my question.

In all seriousness, I don’t think there’s anything at all wrong with asking the Admissions office your question and I don’t think it would have any effect on your child’s admission prospects. And I feel you would get more accurate information. You are free to make your choice, I never said otherwise. I certainly did not “reprimand” you. I gave what I consider good advice on a thread about this exact topic.

This next part is for the benefit of lurkers; booklady, it’s fine if you don’t read on and it is in no way directed at you.

I read an interesting article about a college AO and his participation on cc. He was dismayed at how people would take all kinds of advice and information, good, bad, accurate, not, from posters on cc rather than contact a college directly and get the straight dope. He was constantly trying to set the record straight.

I have found great value in many threads on cc and I’ve tried to contribute. But for specific factual information I recommend people go straight to the source. You can always use email to contact a school if you feel it would be an imposition to call. I have always found admissions offices very welcoming and helpful.

I’m sorry, maybe I am a newbie, and nervous, and ill-informed, but when someone says “why don’t you just call AO?” it sure feels like a complaint about my asking it here.

I thought the whole point of this forum was for parents to support each other.

The last question we asked at all of our interviews was “how will we be notified of the school’s decision in the event we submit an application”? Things do sometimes change from year to year and we had 6 schools on our “apply to” list. Also, the receptionist that answers the phone at most admissions offices has this info, so rarely would you be put through to an AO who might have input on your child’s app.

Last year our Exeter rejection came in an email on Saturday March 9, 2013 6:41 AM EST.
(Power of search engine and no emails get deleted policy of mine)

Other schools also sent emails or had portals that were updated from 12AM throughout the day M9. Obviously I was very tired by 5pm checking those all night and all day long. I did not call FedEx. The ultrasounds were inconclusive. Did I say I had a 30 hr labor? Very tiring.

@booklady, I had to call Exeter yesterday with a question and have had to call other schools as well. Background: I have a real aversion to making phone calls and avoid them when practical. The people who answer schools’ phones are all pleasant. They are usually knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the application process, and if they don’t know an answer, they will find someone who does. And…I never had to identify myself, because my questions were of a general nature. I wouldn’t hesitate to call and ask how they handle March 10, if I wanted to know. Don’t worry about bothering them; it’s their job to answer questions, and the AO won’t be involved. Also, I wouldn’t hesitate to email an AO with an important question that can’t be answered another way. Of course, I am as new as you to this and may be wrong about everything! :-)

Oh, believe me, we’ve called more than a few times with other less straightforward questions…I have no problem calling. Really I was just posting here to ask more acedotally how it worked.

In any case, most, if not all, schools will let their applicants know how to find out the admission decisions prior to March 10. There’s no need to call the school JUST for this info at this point of time.

Speaking of traditions, can we try to have a more organized “Results” thread this year instead of the multiple premature and incomplete threads that popped up last year?

^^Yep, last year was like herding cats, but I was waiting for you, 7D, to start the official thread. Maybe we can agree that whoever is up/online first start the “Official” thread (like the sticky) and force the kids/parents to adhere. We have no skin in the game this year, so I’m not volunteering, but someone has to take charge or it will be chaos again. I suggest openening the thread the day before with a clear title and instructions in the first post and with a clear note that NO ONE MAKE COMMENTS in the thread beyond the correct postings. Last year was nuts.

booklady: M10 on CC is like watching sports results come in. If played correctly, you just have to watch the one thread all day to see how everyone did.
