Mac or PC in college?? Any opinions please...

Go with the white one! The black one really is just more expensive because of the color. IMO, the white looks MUCH better!

i heard the white one will give you herpes.

but seriously. the white ones better. i have it and i like it a lot. i kind of like that macbook's are one of the only, if not the only, laptop that's all white. all laptops are either black or grey. its so generic.

haha, the much talked about "Black Mac Tax" -- there's like a 150 price difference for the black, but no, otherwise there is no real difference. The first generation of white Macbooks (Core Duos, not Core 2 Duos) had a lot of issues with the casing where your palms rest. They started to turn 'dirty looking' and couldnt be cleaned off. But they've changed the casing material enough that this doesn't happen with the Core 2 Duo macbooks, so no worries about buying White versus Black. Its really just more of a preference.

I had a white iBook for 6 years and it was super cute. Although, I feel in love with the TiBooks and finally got my perfect silver laptop when I upgraded this winter to my Macbook Pro.

yea, totally a plot to get more money. nothing different at all. in my opinion, youre paying $200 to get rid of the characteristic that makes macs aesthetically unique.

or u can just get a macbook pro

It's a race thing.

Seriously though, I think the black ones look better anyway (that is, if you absolutely have to get a mac). Something about the white ones makes me want to punch them. They're just annoying to look at.

The MacBook Pro (I have one) is an absolutely fantastic machine...wonderful sleek design, gorgeous graphics, excellent reliability, I love mine so much I decided to bump this old thread. Never had a problem with it, after a year of ownership. I want to buy a second one!!

i used to have an iBook but upgraded to a MBP -- I don't take my MBP nearly as many places as I used to tote my iBook just because the size difference between the 12" iBook and the 15" MBP.

Its definitely not too big that its unmanageable to take around, the 12" iBooks and Powerbooks were just more manageable if you were constantly carrying it. But its sooooo much easier to do work on the 15" because of the larger screen -- I don't think I would ever go back since I don't really need the extreme portability of the old 12".

I'm also more careful with my MBP when i take it around; as my iBook got older, I started to just shove it in a bag without a sleeve on it or anything. I'm sure my MBP could take the wear and tear, but I just don't want any scratches on its beautiful body ;)

I might get 3 hours out of it on a good day. The ones released last week should easily get three hours and more since they have new backlighting methods to save battery life. I'd say the only disappointment of my 2.16 Core 2 Duo MBP is battery life. But maybe I just got spoiled by the 5+ hours my iBook could run...

I'll preface this by saying I am not at all a computer guy.

Im not sure what kind of computer I want for college, but I like the way the macbook looks ;). As a normal windows user, how difficult will the tranistion be? I maninly need it for math software, word processing and the like, and internet use, as well as music. Thanks so much!

any major differences asides from the price????

leaning towards getting a macbook btw but my older sister says macbook pro is the way to go

I have a macbook and it does everything I want/need, if that helps you. I might get a macbook when i'm out of undergrad or out of grad, but for now my macbook is just right for me.

major difference would be the integrated video card in the macbook.

I like the silver ones :)

The graphics card will suffice for most graphic heavy applications, excluding video games. However, Macs aren't meant for gaming, integrated graphics card or otherwise.

Well the graphics card also helps a lot for video editing and such. Macbook Pros can handle games such as World of Warcraft.

Macbooks can handle World of Warcraft fine as well.

I would get a macbook, they are a much better deal. The bigger screen and graphics card(only advantages of the pro) are nice though.

"Well the graphics card also helps a lot for video editing and such. Macbook Pros can handle games such as World of Warcraft."

This is a common myth. Most video editing doesn't involve intensive video card use. It mainly relies on your processors, which are similarly spec'd between the Macbook and MBP. You shouldn't experience much of a difference if you're just using iMovie. When you get to more advanced editing programs it might matter more.

I've been told that there are some problems with some math suites, but then you just boot into Windows...

The learning curve to go from Windows to Mac OS is, on average, one to two weeks. Now I feel awkward in Windows.

Blacks are badass.

End of story.

My D switched from a lifetime of Windows to a Mac laptop without a hitch. Now she says she'll never go back.
