Macaulay Honors Transfer?

Hi, I've been accepted into Macaulay Honors at CCNY, but I'm beginning to doubt that applying to that campus was the best choice. I wanted to do engineering, but I might want to switch to Biology. Would I be able to transfer to Macaulay Honors at a different campus? I want to transfer to Macaulay Hunter, which offers a Biomedical Sciences Major that is different than the Biology Major offered at City College, and Hunter has a better reputation for Medical-related fields than CCNY (I want to apply to Medical school later). Please help me!!!

to my knowledge, you cannot transfer between campuses. however, you can take courses at the MHC hunter (although it’s a pain to do all the paperwork). just curious, does CCNY MHCers get free dorming in the Towers?

can you please elaborate on this? how would i go about doing this and what would it entail?

Yes you can transfer between campuses (its not really encouraged and can be limited by available space but yes it can and has been done!) so long as you have a good reason. It sounds like the difference in majors should be enough. Just be aware you probably still won’t get the free dorm although I’m not sure on this though.

i stand corrected. i wasn’t sure because i hadn’t really heard of anyone transferring between campuses, i just know a few freshman that transferred out for the spring.

I second the poster above me (hey, mike).

To my knowledge, the dorm in the towers are not free for Macaulay Students.

Regarding transferring, would I be able to do this before I start at City College, or is that something that would have to wait until the Spring Semester? I was just concerned because I had originally planned on majoring in Engineering, but after some thought, I might want to switch to Biology. However, City College’s Biology Program isn’t as good as Hunter’s in my opinion (Hunter is known for Pre-medical studies and Health Sciences, and that is my goal) and Hunter’s Biomedical Sciences offers concentrations (like Pre-med specific and Biophysics concentrations) that aren’t available in CCNY’s.

And does anyone know how I can go about asking for a transfer (sorry to keep asking these questions guys, I am pretty nervous about making my college decision, and I appreciate all the help you guys are giving me!)

Internal Macaulay transfers are very rare – especially considering that you’re trying to transfer to Macaulay Hunter, which the Macaulay administration may conceive as a move to get the free dorm Macaulay Hunter kids get. Usually the only times they EVER consider allowing a student to transfer Macaulay home campuses is if your current home campus completely lacks resources/classes in your field of interest – and even then it’s difficult. For example, they might possibly allow a Macaulay Baruch student to transfer to Macaulay CCNY if all of a sudden he realizes he wants to pursue engineering (a field completely missing at Baruch). In your case, I highly doubt they will let you transfer to Macaulay Hunter from Macaulay CCNY if you want to pursue biology. If you were to try however, I believe the process includes sending in a letter to the Dean of Macaulay – you can find out the specifics from your advisor. One thing you should note is that you can always take classes at Hunter from CCNY, although getting a CUNY E-Permit to study at other campuses is a pain in the ass as melonbread91 mentions. In general though, it isn’t difficult to pursue biology and pre-med requirements at CCNY since a LOT of students there are pre-med. However, you should know that the classes will be very harshly curved (as are most science classes in all college classes), and that because CCNY is primarily an engineering school, the math and physics courses have an engineering bent and tend to be more rigorous and difficult compared to similar courses at Hunter. If you choose to try to transfer by sending the letter, explain that you realized you don’t want to do engineering, and be VERY specific about why you want to transfer to Hunter, in terms of how the biology major there will benefit you in ways the major at CCNY cannot. Just be warned that even if you send the letter, the transfer may not work. Also, I’m not sure if you can try to transfer now or if you have to matriculate and then try to transfer to Macaulay Hunter (probably the latter though – contact your advisor).
