Does anyone know how hard it is?
How many questions?
How close is the practice test to the actual one?
How many do you need right to get placed into calculus?
Any tips for studying?
Thanks everybody!!!

it’s easy. you should NOT be studying. it’s a placement exam. if you study, you will end up being placed into a math class that is too hard for you.

So I do generally good in math, I should be fine? Im an engineering major so I don’t want to fall behind.

you should be fine. it’s designed so that you’ll be placed into the class that’s best for you. it’s better to be placed in a lower class and get an A+ than to be placed in a class that’s too advanced for you and get a D.

When do they post the results? It says in the FAQ that is takes about a week to have them posted on your MyUCR account under test scores but I have yet to receive mine. What is going on with the system? Or is there a mistake on my results?

i dont remember exactly, but i remember i was getting impatient with mine too way back when lol.

It will be pretty easy if you did well in a full year pre-calc class. It will only seem difficult if you’ve never taken pre-calc or took it and didn’t learn it.

Really? is it like algebra?

The first half is algebra, it’s easy. Then you take a break. The second half is all trig/pre-calculus. It’s harder, but if you’ve taken it, you’ll know most of it. Still waiting to find out my placement…

I just got my results and I placed into Math 5 is that good? What exactly is the hierarchy of math levels?

I got placed into Math 8B, but I am a pre-business major. Should I be taking Math 4 then Math 22 or what do I do?

math 4/math 5/math 8a -> math 8b/math9a-> math 9b-> math 9c-> beyond calculus

bobthepak - lol. math22. you should email an academic advisor though because they might not have cleared you in the system to take math22 since they messed up. (let me know if you want to buy my copy of the book! like new, $90. much cheaper than the campus bookstore.)

I’m a Pre-Business major and I got put into Math 4…is this bad?? How hard/easy is this class? and what exactly is it??

Math4 is “Introduction to College Mathematics for Business and the Social Sciences.” I wouldn’t say it’s bad, but it’s not good. There are many many many sections of math4 offered, meaning a ton of people get placed into this class. So while math 4 does not count towards your requirements, you are not behind the pack. don’t worry about it. this doesn’t place you behind your peers. You can go on to math 22 the quarter after you complete math 4. it should only take you a quarter to complete.

do you think i should take the mae if im a poly sci major. The mae site says i dont need too and that i can clear that requirement with stats or computer science class. If i ever change my mind i can take the mae later on in the year while im a freshmen right? i mean its a hassle to drive like 6 hours to ucr and back to take a test when i dont need to take it. would u say stats/computer science is harder than if u were to take a math course to clear that requirement? thanks.

How do I know who my academic advisor is? The funny thing is that I didn’t take anything higher than algebra 2 in high school and didn’t even study for the MAE.

rickster - you can certainly take the MAE later. if you dont need it, then id agree with you. wait until you’re actually here. although the MAE is offered at locations all across california. i took stat48 and cs8 an they were both ridiculously easy for me. but that’s just me. it really depends which stat and which cs you’re talking about and which math you’re comparing it to. there are easy and difficult classes in all three of those areas…and i dont know enough to give you informed advice…sorry.

bobthepak - google “ucr [your major] academic advising” and you should find a list of academic advisors for your college/major. let me know if you need with that!
