Magazine ranks UF among best places to work in academia

The University of Florida ranks eighth in the United States among the best places to work in academia, according to a new survey by The Scientist magazine.

The rankings were based on 1,623 responses from tenured or tenure-track life scientists working in academia or other noncommercial research organizations. They were asked to assess such areas as personal fulfillment, institutional management, peer relations and tenure procedures.

The magazine ranked 58 institutions in the U.S.

What would make UF better is if they had a major airport close by. Gainesville regional is too small and its an inconvienvce to drive to tampa, j'ville, or orlando. Scientist need to travel to conferances to spread the word about their research and that limits UF from rising further on the list.

Jacksonville is only like 65 miles away.

Still an inconvience compared to some school, and some potential faculty take it into consideration. Harvard (15-20 mins to Logan Intl) UM (15-20 from MIA) Emory/Gatech (~20mins)

If only back in 1905 we had descided to relocate to Jacksonville instead of Gainesville. LOL

No, but seriously it is kind of a pain to have to commute from a major airport to get to UF.

But at the same time land aroud campus is rather cheap to acquire, so if we ever have to buy up property around the university it will not cost half of our yearly budget.

Check out this list if you want to see a ranking of the Top 50.

I see both UF (8) and FSU (48) are on this list so I wonder why we want to raise the tuition so substantially as was suggested on another post when both institutions are top 50 places for academia to work.

"I wonder why we want to raise the tuition so substantially"

Well UF & FSU were ranked the two best public flagship university values in all of higher education (according to a USAtoday ranking).

Pro-tuition booster just simply want a fair tuition rate for the in-state undergraduate rates is all. Let's say hypothetically that both flagship universities doubled their in-state tuiton rates it would still be in the lower 35th percentile among public flagship universities. Besides all we are asking for is the ability to set our rates to a fair market value. I personally think that it is shameful that we are not allowing the two best universities in our state from competing with the best public universities in the country (the state of Florida needs to have better flagship universities, if we are truly going to have the brain power to diversify our economy in the future).
