UPenn does not ask for a personal statement, but I have such a good one, and it explains a unique circumstance in my life I had (family illness). I’m sending it with a short cover letter that so far basically says:

Dear Office of Undergraduate Admissions (?? uh, is this right?)

Because I care tremendously about my application to the University of Pennsylvania, I am submitting this supplemental essay to offer an added dimension to my application. This essay showcases a fundamental part of what I value in life people and how one specific person has drastically changed my perspective. I believe it offers something not seen in any other part of my application and provides my personal insight into a unique circumstance of my life.

Thank you for considering me as a candidate for admission to the University of Pennsylvania.

Is this good? Bad? What should I be saying/not saying?

Thanks!!
Anyone else send a supplemental essay?

I think you may want to use your family illness as a topic for one of the essays they require. Adcoms usually get kinda annoyed when they get additional essays, recs, etc. to read. You may also want your counselor to explain this situation...

If you actually used the common app, you'd be able to fit that essay in without it being awkward because they have an "Additional Info" section...

actually, i sent an extra rec with my ed application from my community service director because i am extremely involved in community service and couldn't convey the extent of that on my app. so if you are unable to get something across by only using the application, i don't think sending in extras will hurt you. in fact, it may even help.

Your extra rec probably said something different than your teacher recs. Some people submit 10 teacher recs. Penn does not like that, unless all 10 can say very different things about you. Penn does not want anything extra unless it adds to the application.

EskimoGirl--Yes, your rec probably helped. I did not mean additional recs that way. As ventakar mentioned some people (I have seen a kid on CC sending in 7 teacher recs) send in quite a bit and all essentially say the same thing. Adcoms have a lot of other applications to read so.....Reading college apps isnt exactly the most exciting thing in the world to do.
