Major and prereq question

My initial plan was to apply as a comm major to UCLA but after speaking with an undergrad adviser there, I became discouraged as the major is one of the most impacted majors and my GPA is a meager 3.75. Anyway, I decided to apply as an English major (i know...also impacted, but not quite as much as comm) but got to thinking...considering the fact that I have completed all of the prereqs for comm, would I have a better chance of getting in as a comm major over English even though generally speaking, comm is much harder to get into? What do you guys think?

yes. Try for comm.

thanks sopheee. oh, and the comment about transferring being easier than a drunk girl at a USC party? hilarious.

;););););)

Listen to me…DO NOT APPLY AS A COMM TRANSFER. You’ll have 0/10 chance of getting in. Even if you had a 3.89 with all pre-reqs complete with A’s and AMAZING EQ’S you would not get in. Due to the fact that Comm is a small dept and very impacted they only look at apps with a 3.9 and above.

SMCguy…what do you think about English?

Do you like English? I’m assuming you’ll complete the 2 english courses to fulfill IGETC. Will you be able to take the other 2 literature courses? I’m not sure about the foreign language requirement…I’ve heard there are diff options for this.

Look at the UCLA profile of admitted students.

English admits = 47.15% were admitted, average GPA was 3.64
Comm admits = 9.09% were admitted, average GPA was 3.95

Assuming you’d finish most of the prereqs I think you have a really good shot with UCLA English. I wanted to apply as a Comm major sooooooooooo bad so I researched it…talked with counselors @ UCLA and SMC and they all tell me that I will not get in…and I feel like this is one time that I should listen because they know what they’re talking about, it’s not like some random person simply being negative.

Hey there,

SMCguy is 100% right! The avg. transfer gpa was infact a 3.95 for comm. that’s insane if you ask me!!

lol

here

that should help you out. It’s my bible lately. the rates (for non impacted majors) aren’t nearlyyyy as bad as I originally thought!

yea…i am leaning toward English. Unfortunately, my cc doesn’t offer any other English courses that will transfer over at UCLA for GE credit besides the ones required for transfer. How did you speak with a UCLA counselor? I understand you live in LA…did you go in person? Am I able to correspond with a counselor via e/m?

SeeHerFly- Which CC do you go to?

I go to Ohlone College in NorCal. They cut classes severely due to budget restrictions. =T

Well the rule is that if your school doesn’t offer the classes then it’s not held against you.

Are you taking these?
ENGL 101A
ENGL 101B
ENGL 105B

4th semester of one foreign language
OR
2nd semester of one foreign language and two additional courses in foreign language.

Here, email them undergraduate@english.ucla.edu or call 310.825.1389

Completed 101A,B,C and planning to take 105B next semester. Haven’t finished language prereq yet. Only in my first semester of Spanish right now.

Have my chances decreased even more?

oh…and thank you for the contact info!

I’m not sure about the foreign language, but you’re showing effort so my guess is you still have a good shot!

Anyone else wanna give their opinion??

I just looked at the Assist page. It looks like Ohlone doesn’t offer the first Survey to English Lit or the Lit in translation. Maybe you should take the classes thatOhlone doesn’t offer at another CC?

I think you would be in for english. History had about a 44% (I think, I’m too lazy to check again) acceptance rate last year, which is close to english, and I met a girl at orientation who didn’t have any of the proper pre-reqs done for UCLA (she had prepared for Cal). So I think a solid GPA and an obvious interest in the subject (loads of English classes) would be solid. Especially if you explain on your application why you couldn’t take the recommended pre-reqs. Oh, and you have been checking assist.org, right?

But, seriously, if you LOVE comm, I think you should go for it. 3.75 is not meager, and if you can get all As this semester you could bring it up to a level that would make you on-par with other applicants. I understand the worry though.

Hey there
sorry I totally don’t mean to make another question here lol. since the OP Has already posted one…

but…is a 3.63 a bad gpa to apply to ucla? non-impacted major, btw. i really really wanna go! (i had almost a 3.8 before last semester—REALLY screwed up, almost dropped out…lotta personal problems…so it brought it down to a 3.54…grr!!!)

what major?
