I was recently deferred and was wondering if I should change my major. I applied for engineering which I know is very tough to get into. I was thinking about changing my first choice major to First Year College so I could hopefully matriculate into the college of engineering after my first year. My stats are closer the averages of FYC so I think I would have a better chance of getting accepted. The only problem is that I am worried that It will look bad if I changed my major to FYC because they will think that I am just trying to get accepted into a less competitive college.

The First Year College FAQ's states " Students who apply to a specific major (i.e., Engineering) and are not accepted by that major should not assume that they can enter FYC and automatically get into their desired major. The purpose of FYC is to give students who are truly undecided time and resources for choosing a major."

Does anyone know anyone who changed their major to FYC and was accepted, or anyone who was waitlisted or denied? If so please post their stats if known!

Any advice at all will also be very appreciated!!!

I’m in a similar situation except I don’t have the same major. I just went second choice FYC because if the chances of switching into my desired major are very low then why would I go to NCSU. If I don’t get into my first choice and get into FYC I’ll do research on what my chances are to into my major. I’m assuming engineering is hard to switch into though.

@sbelamarich Whats are your stats? I changed my first choice to FYC and my second to accounting. I was deferred off of a low SAT score but recently brought them up to what they are now. I have a friend who was accepted to FYC after being deferred, he had a 4.2 and a 1120. But percentages of deferred student who get admitted seems to change every year and NCSU seems to get harder and harder to get into every year… My friend said as long as you make A’s and B’s you can matriculate into the College of Engineering and I feel like the advisors for FYC would really help in keeping my GPA on track.

I applied business and so it’s really not a fair comparison because of the prestige of the engineering program. I have similar sat scores to your friend. Also it’s easy to say you’re going to get A’s and B’s, but college is going to be a lot harder than high school. Anyways, I’m not sure your chances to get into NCSU increase just because you put FYC as your first choice compared to putting as your second. Maybe it does it’s tough to say. Did your friend put FYC as first choice? Because if he did I might do the same.

also why does everyone have a gpa above 4. At my school you can’t get higher than 4.0? I understand weighted grades. But people from my school got in with 3.0’s.

My friend left his application as is. He had his first choice as Engineering and his second as FYC. He did not get into the college of Engineering but got into his second choice FYC. I know its gonna be really tough but ill be more focused on my grades than I will be on partying definitely until I get into the college of Engineering. And many high schools are different concerning GPA. Colleges look at your high school and the classes it offers and makes a decision off of that. At my school unweighted is on a 4.0 scale and weighted is 5.0. @sbelamarich

Yea so I might continue with the same major choices. I just wish they told you a gpa requirement for switching into the college. That would be helpful instead of going into FYC unaware of the chances of getting into the desired college would be.
