Hello! I have been accepted to UCSB but not to the major I wanted which was mechanical engineering. I have requested a major change and this is the answer I got back:

We have received your request, but we do not yet know if there will be any spaces available in the Mechanical Engineering major. We receive a large number of applications for Mechanical Engineering, and there are not many spaces. There are many excellent applicants who we want to admit to UCSB but cant accommodate in Mechanical Engineering, so we admit them to alternate majors. I am keeping a list of the people making these major change requests. It is a very long list. When it gets closer to the May 1 SIR deadline, we will have a better idea of whether or not we will have room for any more students in Mechanical Engineering. Im sorry that we cant give you an answer right now, but I hope to have an answer for you by May 1. Some people try to change their majors to Mechanical Engineering after they start at UCSB in another major. It is possible to do this, but very difficult because there are limited spaces. For more information on that, you can contact Suzi See at ssee@engineering.ucsb.edu . Please let me know if you have any more questions.

So, does that mean I am on the waiting list for engineering? i need advice, as the deadline approaches what should I do?

I would send in your SIR and ask about the major change after May 1st.

I sent in my SIR a long time ago and recently changed my major from undecided to Pre-Biopsychology without any problems.

thanks, but on their website it says: "Prior to submitting your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR), you may change your major to one listed on the chart below. If you are interested in a major that UCSB offers, but which is not listed, acceptance into that major requires additional evaluation of your records. " Shouldn’t I wait for the deadline to get closer and see if they reply before I enroll?

If UCSB is definitely the school that you want to go to, I would say submit your SIR anyway and you can figure out the major change later. If your enrollment depends on whether or not you are accepted to the ME major, I guess you should wait.

When you submit your SIR, you’re just saying that you are going to enroll. It is simply a Statement of INTENT to Register. So accepting admission say, under Biology, and then changing your major BEFORE you start classes at UCSB should not be a problem, to my knowledge. Does that make sense? I think that’s why the email said “Some people try to change their majors to Mechanical Engineering after they start at UCSB in another major. It is possible to do this, but very difficult because there are limited spaces.” I think changing your major to ME would only be difficult if you study for a quarter or more under a different major.

Warning though: I’m pretty sure they will let you know AFTER May 1st whether or not you are admitted to the ME major because they’ll first calculate how many open seats they have for that major. Obviously, they won’t know how many students have enrolled for ME until the deadline passes.

I hope all of that made sense. I’m not an expert on all of this, so don’t hold me to it, but I"m pretty sure that’s the way it goes.

I hope that helps! Wish you the best!

mechanical engineer is hard to get into, as what i’ve heard from friends. But make sure you take the neccessary classes lol. That’s all what i can say :I

I also got in as undecided, and ME was my first choice.
So, I sent in a major change request and got an answer that I’d have to wait.
I submitted my SIR since I was going to UCSB anyways, (this was about 2 weeks ago)
And today, I got an e-mail saying that I GOT INTO ME!
but I think the only reason they sent me an e-mail notification is becaue I asked a question.
Unless, it’d be updated on the UCSB admissions website.

So yes, you can submit your SIR before they approve your ME major change. It will not affect their decision.
Hopefully you got your approval already!

i was admitted to my alternate major physics but today i received an email stating that i got into mechanical engineering, i haven’t sent in my SIR yet and i really ought to. I’m deciding between UCD, UCI, and UCSB… it’s becoming a really hard decision and I have to chose in 5 days X_X!!!
