Major College Indecision...help! FSU vs Penn State

Florida State Vs Penn State?
Opinions?

Tell us something about yourself and the major sticking points you are having between the two schools. Are finances an issue? What’s on the table?

I am going to major in secondary education (English to be more specific).
The price difference between Penn State and FSU is about $10,000 because I plan to attend summer session for either school. The thing that has me most torn is that everyone tells me of the prestige of Penn State, but it is the pricing of the school that has me the most worried. I want to get my masters degree, so I would be spending about 5 years at either school.

Also, my parents are planning to move to florida in about 2 or three years because my dad is retiring. I love florida and FSU, but I’m not sure if having a PSU degree would benefit me more.

For teaching, the most “prestigious” degree is the one that is most likely to get you a job in the city or state where you want to work. Will you be starting your career in Pennsylvania? Then a good teacher’s training program in Pennsylvania is what you want. Will you be starting your career in Florida? Then you want a degree from a college or university in Florida.

All of your course practicums and student teaching will be spent in different schools and possibly even different school districts that have agreed to allow student teachers into their classrooms. Each of these offers you chances to network with potential employers because teachers often find their first jobs in one of the schools where they did some of their pre-service training.

That said, many young teachers do move to a different part of the country in search of that first job. If you don’t know yet which of these places is where you want to start your career, it is fine to choose the one that will let you begin that career with the least amount of debt.

Actually, if you are thinking about living in or around FL after college an FSU degree will travel better much better for you than one from PSU. Tons and tons of helpful alums and connections will await you.

The opposite might be true if you plan to be anywhere around PA after graduation.

The brand name of your college is often more or less depending on what area of the country you decide to live in. Employers in FL frequently hire FSU and FU grads over students from other schools considered more “prestigious.”

very valid points! right now it looks like FSU would be a smarter choice then. I would love to teach in FL and it would leave me with the least debt after 5 years.

Yep. Do it. It won’t put you any disadvantage … well, not unless you consider the perpetually sunny disposition you’ll have from enjoying the weather, people, and the prospect of being near your parents (assuming you like them) at some point in the future, a disadvantage :).

Good luck!

thanks a lot!
