Major Common App Question!!!

Hey guys, since the common app is getting changed this time, have you guys started on the application yet? It looks like it is really going to be different.

And also, if a college that you are applying to does not accept the Common App, but has essay prompts very similar to the one on the Common App, can you just write one essay for both and submit it to both colleges? Obviously, I will tweak the essay a bit to make it fit more into what the common app/individual college wants, but the main theme and many paragraphs will be similar, if not the same.

The answer to your paragraph question depends. If you want to be original to both colleges I would suggest writing different essays. But if the essay prompts are similar and you don’t want to write another and think that that essay is sufficient, you can send the same one to both of the colleges.

Also, do NOT start your commonapp application yet. They have put an announcement on their website saying that commonapp 4 will be released for the fall 2014 admissions on the 1st of August.

The common app ALWAYS goes live on 8/1. So starting now is fine.

I just finished my essay. Never too early to start. The essay prompts are up, so I feel that it would be good to get it out of the way, especially when you have two handfuls to write like me… lol.

Also, I am planning to write similar essays for other schools. I’m using my CommonApp essay as a reference to write others. Good luck!

The prompts are accessible HERE: https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Docs/DownloadForms/2013/EssayAnnouncementFinal.pdf

If you can reuse an essay, you definitely should.

Omg its live gogogogogogogogogogogogogogo apply apply apply omgomgomgogoogmogmg

It’s up and live. It is a bit different and there has been a little trouble getting on, but I suspect that is just because of the high, early traffic.

OP: There is nothing wrong with using the same basic essay for two different colleges with very similar essay prompts. Best of luck!
