I just got accepted into UCSD for Physio and Neuro, but now that I know about Human Biology, I'm not sure if I should switch majors. I think I like the upper division Human Biology courses better (since there aren't any animal courses and they seem more medical related) but I still want to make an informed decision.

So can someone tell me about their major if they are in any of these 2 programs and if they are any pros and cons I wouldn't know about? I would appreciate it greatly and thank you so much!

(Also, side question. It is possible to study abroad in these programs? I'm worried that if I take a semester abroad I'll miss some important classes that I need to fulfill requirements. Then again, I don't really know how all of this works ahh)

The only difference between the two majors are the classes you have to take. Pick whichever one has more required classes that you are interested in taking, or whichever name you like better on your degree. Keep in mind that each major also has electives which can be any upper division class in the biology department, so if (for example) you love all the classes for the Neuroscience major, but you also really want to take three of the classes required by the human bio major, you could easily take these classes as your electives and they would still count for your major. Or you could take any extra biology class that you want just for fun or out of interest. I took more majors in the biology department than my major required. Pick whichever major that has more requirements that you like, or you can avoid the major that requires a class you don’t want to take. Switching your major literally takes thirty seconds. It doesn’t matter.

Yes, you can study abroad in any major. Just make sure that you plan ahead. A lot of students will plan to take certain GEs abroad, since those are more likely to transfer and less likely to really make a difference in their major. Many, many students at UCSD go abroad at some point, and there are a lot of different options to make it work. If you can’t make it work to go abroad during the school year, you can also abroad during the summers. There are global seminars that are shorter programs over the summer, and are taught in English, I believe. You can also do research or internships abroad as well. Check out their website for options (<a href=“Study Abroad”>http://icenter.ucsd.edu/pao/), and plan on attending a first steps session when you are ready to. I know when I was a student there, there also an info session at some point specifically about studying abroad in biology that you could attend as well, for some more information. They’re pretty good at working with you to find something that works for you. You just have to have the initiative to make it happen.

I am in the same boat as you @fjqmi846 ! I’m thinking of switching to Human Biology as well because I like the upper-division requirements much more than the Neuroscience and Physiology ones.

Is there a way I can change my major for UCSD before I decide and commit to UCSD?

I don’t know if you can change your major before you’re a student at UCSD, but there would be no point to it. If you decide to attend UCSD, you can change your major online whenever you want (unless you want to change to an impacted major). If you don’t decide to attend UCSD, then it doesn’t matter what your major is.

That’s true haha. Thanks! UCSD is one of my top choices. I’m pretty excited. :)

@baktrax Thank you so, so much! Your response was really helpful.
@krickadoodle I’m pretty sure I’m coming here. Maybe I’ll see you around :)
